Well I suppose it depends certain religions don't allow blood transfusions while certain occupations will have you exposed to different germs, toxins, pesticides etc.

Hospital provide chaplaincy services. They could send you a rabbi when you'd prefer to see a priest.

When you wake up just long enough for the doctor to tell you your about to die because they couldn't identify your weird disease you caught from your job dealing with tropical animals (that they didn't know about) and didn't know whether to give you blood in case you sued them, you can die safe in the knowledge that you beat them with your secrecy.

OP - you think that's bad? The last time I was in there, they asked me about my most recent bowel movement!!! Nosey gits. :D

I dont understand why people get worked up over questions like that. What possible benefit could you get from declining to answer such questions ?

Healthcare loves statistics. The more boxes you fill in, the more statistics that can be produced.

They asked me if I ever had sex with a chimpanzee. And I was only in visiting someone!

It's a cheap way of checking your blood pressure. They also don't provide free wifi so you can post about how outraged you are at being asked to answer such questions.

Hate when a good old fish-in-a-barrel religion thread is brought down to its knees at such a tragically young age. :pac:

Jehovah's Witnesses are ones that can't have transfusions, i can't remember if other religions have the same
The doctrine was introduced in 1945, and has undergone some changes since then. Members of the religion who voluntarily accept a transfusion are regarded as having disassociated themselves from the religion by abandoning its doctrines and are subsequently shunned by members of the organization. Although accepted by the majority of Jehovah's Witnesses, a minority does not endorse this doctrine.

Is it the HSE or is it a "voluntary" religious affiliated hospital like many in the country?

OP,it would be one thing if they asked whats your salary and your bank balance but what difference would it make if you told them you were a Scientologist sheep shearer.

Also some religions will have particular dietary requirements.

Edit: although having said that, they didn't ask you about any non-religious dietary requirements, did they? So scrub that one.

And indeed you are correct; irrespective of whichever of the three branches you attended, it is an HSE hospital. Some people forget that many of the large hospitals in the larger cities (esp Dublin) are not HSE institutions. Admittedly, some (St Vincent's, St James's, The Mater, etc) have religious names and might be expected not to be HSE owned/controlled but others (Beaumont, Tallaght AMNCH) are also not HSE owned and some have an established religious ethos.

yeah but if you are able to eat you should be able to talk or have a chance to mention it before you are fed.

Although i guess if you were in PETA then they don't like animal tested drugs like insulin.

unless of course you are the VP of PETA and need it to live then its ok

Some people have, well its not an allergic reaction, more of an intolerance towards religion. So maybe they were testing for that.

They probably wanted to learn more about you. Probably asked your address, age and medical history too, huh? Nosey bastards.

Next time, just walk into a hospital and say, "I am a human, treat me medically."

When they ask - what's your name, what's wrong with you or what you do for a living, or how you want to be treated, just say, "I am a human, treat me medically."

When they refuse, tell them about your principles.

Given the state of the HSE at the moment you would likely get better care at the vet.

    I'm Kent Brockman.

At 3:00 PM Friday, local autocrat C. Montgomery Burns was shot, following a tense confrontation at town hall. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was then taken to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to "alive."

When I was in Vincents last year the dinner I got did not match the boxes I had ticked that morning. Didn't mind, it was edible.
When I asked the person with the trolley about it, she explained that what I had ticked that morning was what I would get for dinner tomorrow.
What I was eating that day, had been chosen by the previous occupant. Perhaps I was eating a meal from beyond the grave?

I don't mind them asking but I hate when they won't take my answer as being true. Twice when in hospital I was asked about religion and I said "none". Neither nurses would take that and said things like "you have to be something" "will we put down Catholic?" I said no and insisted. One of them said "but we need to know if we have to get a priest or a minister if you are dying" I told her I wanted my family in that case not some stranger mumbling mumbo jumbo over me.

I am all about respect others religions but please please respect the fact that I have none.

I didn't like it when neither the doctors or nurses believed me that I did not know what colour my last bowel movement was either. A bit like yourself, when pressed, I settled on 'brown'. I tried selling the point that it was of no established colour, but they were having none of that. So, I just went with brown........ :)

I'm guessing the person asking you the questions had your file on a computer, and those questions were flagged up as being not filled in. They probably had to ask you those questions and fill something in to move on with the process. They wouldn't give a flying fcuk if you belong to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. That sort of info is voluntary anyway, there will always be an 'Unspecified' or 'Unknown' option if you don't want to give it.
