How long can Gardai reasonably hold personal property?

I had my phone stolen in an assault last year, I was able to help the Gardai track the phone and they were able to recover it the same night.

I confirmed the IMEI number and I was told I would be able to collect my phone after 6 weeks. When I went to collect it I was told they'd have to keep it for another month and they would be in contact. I rang again after a month and was told again, wait another month.

How long can Gardai hold personal property?

Has someone been charged in connection with the assault or the theft? If so, your phone is evidence; you probably won't see it again until after the trial.

The fact that the guards aren't saying this in as many words may indicate that noone has been charged as yet, but they still expect to charge someone.

Buy an unlocked cheapie to use until after the trial.
