Hi I am due to be made redundant in a months time. The question I have my wife is not from Ireland and I will have to wait for 9 weeks to qualify for J.S . Would it be ok to spend some part of the 9 weeks out the country as it would be cheeper for me to live out there (outside the EU). Sorry if this is a stupid question but its the first time ever I have been out of work. Thanks in advance.

There is no waiting time if you are made redundant, sign on on the first day you are unemployed.

Depends on the amount of redundancy received

Sorry I did not make that clear. I will be getting over the 50k mark hence the 9 weeks. But I have holidays booked in my wife's home country 3 weeks before the planned redundancy date and will come back with no job . The rational I had is that to stay on as its way cheaper live in my wife's home.

The consensus on another thread about this was, the best thing to do is to sign on after the nine weeks are up.You will not be entitled to a payment therefore there is no need to sign on.

Thanks for that mp22 you have been a great help. I thought because you were not claiming money it just meant putting claim in before the end of the 9 weeks. So might as well extend our holiday but will check in the labour exchange or what ever they are called now.

Just a different question is your redundancy calculated on your gross earnings on your last P60? Its we are in Dublin tomorrow to vote on the redundancy offer. Thanks again for the help and good work.

I have no idea how redundancy is calculated.Try the work and jobs forum.
