Recommend me a clay kit...

    Folks,
    Gave the new (to me) car it's first wash today. It came up good but wow you can still feel the crud on it after a wash.

    I've never clayed before so no knowledge about it (I know I need to be careful / technique etc.)

    Can anyone recommend a kit (I know kits come with lube - it this necessary?)?

    I'd never done more than a wash and wax before myself, and found the Autoglym kit fairly handy - comes with the polish to apply after claying, detailing spray (big bottle, can use liberally and should) and soft cloths to buff with. Also got extra gloss protection to seal it up after the polish, also Autoglym so designed to work on top of the polish.

    You probably need something to remove the tar after a good wash (and dry), before you clay. Also worth getting something good to wash with.

    As a first timer, found it took way longer than anticipated, and I did need to take my time. Clay is a tiny piece you've to cover the whole car with slowly after a good prep! Plus car prob never has had as much TLC, so like you say, crud to remove! Have to allow polish to dry to haze before buffing (few mins) and egp takes longer again to dry a bit before buffing (it recommends 30 mins). So good weather or a garage!

    The car came from a dealer so they had it prepped to an OK standard clean wise. There's very little tar (around the arches as usual) but yeah it'll need to be removed.

    Have been told petrol and a light rag will do the job so long as you wash after

    I've found a mix of petrol and diesel quite good for cleaning off heavy tar deposits - stick it in an empty de-icer trigger bottle for ease of use. For final prep I used Chemical Guys Bug Bugger & Tar Remover - it removed the traces of petrol/diesel/dissolved tar from the paint in readiness for claying and polishing.
