    http://readwrite.com/2014/02/13/facebook-provides-50-new-gender-identity-options#awesm=~ovTMygrh41CURw

Facebook had just introduced 56 gender options to appease the extremely vocal tumblr lobby, gender is binary even if it means you can't be a special little snowflake. And for the record I have nothing against transgender people, surely a MTF is now just a female and FTM is now just a male, end of story.

And why couldn't they do 57 and add 'alpha male?' I'm offended I have to identify as being the same as an average Joe.

I dont even know what most of those mean and there looks to be a lot of repetition.

You have to question why Facebook wants your gender other than to probably sell your info to advertisers. Your name and picture makes your gender pretty clear. I can't say I have questioned what gender a John smith was.

"Personally, I consider myself to belong to one of the two most common gender identities. Because this is all I know, anyone who identifies in another way is wrong, and possibly mentally ill. I'll never understand why people have different perspectives to mine, and even though how they identify themselves doesn't affect my life in the slightest, it's normal for me to be annoyed by them!"

Christ, some of you will just get mad about anyone being different from you, won't you? How boring must life be, seeing only such limited options.

Why not just live and let live?

It's a gender.. What's so hard about just saying you are male or female. It's so pointless having the rest of them. If you have a penis you're male. If you have a vagina you are female. Then just tick other for mutilated.

Im all for live and let live but do we need 56 gender types? I looked up cis on the list. Its pretty much born male and feel male (or female) which as a term fair enough but I dont see how male/female doesnt cover that in terms of defining gender.

Why is it never the captain of the rugby team who decides he's a pangender otherkin or the local beauty queen who decides she's a gender-fluid two-spirit?

It's always the attention seeking ones with the nation-state sized chips on their shoulders, they kick up a stink about equality and sully legitimate claims from actual unconventional gender identities like transgender people.

It may seem like I'm pandering to transgenders but In my view if you're willing to get the chop because you feel you where born in the wrong body then that's enough to legitimise you're claim.

Because anti scientific **** about "gender as a construct" is about as scientific as astrology and or creationism and is, unlike these two, taught in universities.

Eh, I understand a good few of them but some seem to be just copies of other ones.
All in all, it's a bit too much but I can understand the need for some of the options.

No not necessarily. If you have an intersex condition then it's not. If you define as non binary or as genderqueer then it's not.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Others used to cut off peoples scalps and use them as loofahs.

I know all the kids around here had a field day changing their genders anyway - most opted for "Transexual" thinking it only hilarious. One of mine opted for bisexual because he thought it meant he would get twice as many girls. We didn't shatter his illusions yet.

    The 'Gender questioning' option?

I understand both sides here. It is a bit much but in the end, why do you care? How does it affect you? It's not like they put 56 differently labeled toilets into a building funded with your taxes. It's a drop down list on Facebook.

I can see how some of these are valid, and long overdue. But 56?! Would it really make such a difference to be able to pick 'MTF' instead of 'Male to female'? I have never heard this 'cis' thing before, anyone know what that's all about?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

And the weakening of the human race continues. We're, without a doubt, setting ourselves up for the destruction of our species, there's no doubt it. Within 2 centuries I fully expect us to be conquered by some intergalactic race who realise that there are only three genders... Man, woman and llama.
