    I don't hate it. But neither do I consider it particularly romantic. I imagine the worst place to be on Valentine's night is an over crowded restaurant serving a 'special' menu (ie half the quality for twice the price) to self conscious couples who'd secretly rather be somewhere else.

    Exactly. People seem to really enjoy doing the whole Hallmark & cliché thing, while ranting about it. I think the rant is just a cover for their true love of all things sugary. By 'people' I mean men with masochistic taste in women.

    There would be a lot of miffed partners if they didn't receive a €3 card and a few roses on Valentine's day. It's nothing to do with being romantic, it's to do with valuing your life.

    You'd think that if you were in a relationship with someone, they'd know you well enough to know your feelings about Valentine's Day. If they don't, then there's a communication problem in the relationship. Pretending there's no choice but to pander to something instead of actually dealing with it, is not going to get anyone anywhere they want to be.

    Real men choose girlfriends/wives wisely in the first place. And vice versa.

    <massive generalisation>
    The only people who really complain about Valentine's Day are men in a relationship with a girl who loves Valentine's Day and ladies who happen to be single on the day and convince themselves that they hate it.

    No, I don't :confused: If it's pesky little tactics like emotional blackmail or nagging, I don't do that shít and nor do I tolerate it from anyone else. Forcing is way more serious than that.

    The only time you should be buying flowers is when you have done something wrong .

    Romance is definitely dead on this thread! :) What about appreciation, mutual respect, communication, adoration, gratitude, respect, mutuality, understanding and lets not forget relationship? Maybe even pretend for one day?

    We agreed not to do Valentine's day because if we do all that **** this year (our first Valentine's day) we'd end up doing it every year. I got him his fave beer and weed the other day so that he at least has something from me, and on a day I'm not expected/obliged to. Next year just agree not to do it in advance. Also, usually its just the thought that matters, so 4 euro or 40 euro, it wouldn't matter.

    It's not pedantry - I hate the presumption that just because some men let themselves get stuck in relationships with mad kitschy Valentine harpies, all women are like that.

    We don't do Valentines, maybe go out and get pissed but none of that mushy "Wuv you wots, my precious kitten!" dross that I'm seeing all over Facebook today. Vomit-inducing.

    We're probably extra cynical today because one of our pets died yesterday.

    Though, we're going to make a big fùck off banoffe pie for ourselves and gorge on that to cheer us up. Top that off with some beers and it should be grand :pac:

    Or maybe some guys just think it's simpler to buy the bloody card and box of chocolates that turning the whole thing into a power struggle.
