Has anyone ever gone Cross Country outside of a package deal ? Just booked some flights and accommodation, rented skis and headed off on your own routes ?

That's a very broad question! Have you any experience of cross-country? Would you need lessons? Are you experienced enough to head off on your own? Is there a particular place you're thinking of/know well? There's no reason why you couldn't do it if you know what you're at- what's the actual question?!

No lessons required ! - just a place to fly to we can use as a base, rent a small amount of equipment if needs be and head off ourselves. I guess some place where theres a good local cross country scene without getting too much package holiday traffic.

Ah ok. Have a look at Geilo, Norway. 220kms of cross country & mainly local tourism. Not much night-life either lol, but I guess that's what you want ;-)
