The former Denmark coach Richard Moller Nielsen, who led the country's national team to the European Championship in 1992, has died aged 76, the Danish football association said on Thursday.

Moller Nielsen had been ill since undergoing an operation for a brain tumour in July last year.

After ending his seven-year playing career with Odense, his hometown club, in 1962, he went on to coach several Danish clubs, as well as the Finland and Israel national teams, in a coaching career that spanned four decades.

The highlight was Euro 92 in Sweden, when Denmark were a late replacement in the tournament for the former Yugoslavia, and under Moller Nielsen went on to clinch the title with a 2-0 victory over Germany in the final.

Peter Schmeichel , their goalkeeper in the final, called Nielsen "an inspiration, my teacher and my friend".

He added: "Rest in peace my friend."

Personally I think Denmark's victory was one of the biggest shocks ever they were 80/1 after two games and needed to beat the Dutch to make the semi-finals and all done without Michael Laundrup. A national hero who will be missed hugely in Denmark.

Yugoslavia were actually meant to be the team there instead of Denmark, but the war meant Denmark took their place in last moment.

Thats not to take anything away from Denmark. Some win especially the teams they beat. Germany were World Camps at the time.

Maybe that's why the Germans lost.

    Sad to hear.

Euro 92 was one of the first tournaments I remember properly, and Denmark winning it was fairytale stuff.

Euro 92 was a bittersweet finals for me as I reckoned that tournament was Ireland's best ever chance to win a legit tournament. Despite only finishing second in qualifying Ireland were imho by far the best team in the qualifying group. Ireland played some excellent stuff at times and really looked like a top side, one who could have done something against what was really only a fairly average selection of finals opponents.

Watch 0:52 to 1:33 to see how Ireland could really turn the screw on the opposition.

Anyway, that said though, once it got to the finals I was behind Denmark and was delighted to see them win it.

    RIP Richard Moller Nielsen.
