    Wrong.

    Saloon:
    08 E60 530d Manual - 170g/km - €570
    08 E60 530d Auto - 176g/km - €750

    Estate:
    08 E60 530d Manual - 176g/km - €750
    08 E60 530d Auto - 180g/km - €750

Petrol surprisingly is €750 to tax.

Doesn't it depend on whether it's an import or not? I understand that any 2008 import is taxed based on CO2 but if it's an Irish car, the new system only applies to cars registered as and from July 1, 2008.

i have a 1.6 jan 2008, pay €514 under engine size (irish car).

Original Irish cars registered from 1st Jan to 30th June 2008 had the option of whichever was lowest. All imports go onto the Co2 system. However I very doubt you will find a 2008 530d on the old tax system.

OP, the other thing to factor in beside cheaper tax is the purchase price. The 2008 will have the low tax built into the higher purchase price, whereas a 2007 on the higher old tax system will be a lot cheaper to buy. Do some maths and see is it worth spending more for less tax.

All imports are CO2 alright, but most people won't bring in an older type that lands them into the higher rate.

That's because it's cheaper to tax it at CC rates. Have you tried to work out your CO2 rate?

Yes you are right re imports but you are wrong re Irish cars. Early 08 irish cars were automatically placed onto the cheapest system after July 1st.
In my case, I bought in april 08. Paid 3 months tax on cc system. Tax renewal came with car switched to co2 systemm

    How much did you save?

that would cost €750 based on emissions in band e at 175 emissions. SEAI have a part on their site where you can check your cars emissions, how green is my car,

Wouldn't call it save because this was all understood before I went and bought the car and as such I was only ever paying the higher rate for 3 months and I considered that worthwhile to have the car 3 months earlier in the year. The new tax rate was 440 I think while the old cc rate was 530 approx I think at the time.
Unfortunately, the co2 rate had since climbed to 570 approx.

...that's what I was thinking as well.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Secondhand, because it was very cheap. New, I've no idea either.

Because a manual 530d (07 on) will cost 570 to tax versus 750 for the auto. Sure you'd want to be mad to pay 180quid for gears to be changed for you

On another point why would anyone buy a 530d auto instead of an 530i (post LCI) on the same tax rate unless they were doing lunar mileage.

But in that car segment the standard expected includes automatic transmission - and non auto cars in the e60's segment suffer greater depreciation

If it were me, 530i would be manual and 530d would be auto. Manual 530d wouldn't appeal that much.

Great information , thanks everyone. Surprised at the difference between auto v manual ,touring v saloon and petrol v diesel. This co2 lark is a bit of a joke anyways when you see how it's calculated have a read of this

It's all based on the cars footprint. Same way an X5 with the same 30d engine is 1200 on CO2 of that era.

Exactly! E180 is an irrelevance if you can afford to buy an 08+ 530d! Its laughable how only the motor tax is seen as a waste of money, the depreciation and loan interest (if applicable) are never mentioned...
