Is Boards.ie even "Irish" anymore?

I was posting in a thread the other day and someone claimed this is an Irish website. What nonsense. People from all over the world post here. There are forums for Islam, life in Japan and the Russian language, for example. I'd even hazard a guess that White Irish are a minority on this site.

It's like that classic racist slogan "Ireland for the Irish". No it's not. Ireland is there for the benefit of all nations of the world.

    Is Ireland even "Irish" anymore?

People from all over the world live here. There are people who are Muslim, have lived in Japan and speak the Russian language, for example.

I'd have thought that white Irish would be in a huge majority on this site

It was set up in Ireland, hence it can probably be accurately described as an "Irish" website.

Absolute rubbish. I'd hazard a guess that the majority of users on this site are white Irish (whether they have emigrated or not). People from other countries mainly use this site to see things from an Irish perspective or because they love keeping up to date with affairs in Ireland.

It's actually possible to be Irish and Muslim at the same time by the way, seeing as you pointed out the Islam forum.

And as to the life in Japan forum, I would have thought that's obviously aimed more at Irish people living in Japan so that they have a place to discuss things such as the differences in cultures, how they adapt to living there etc. Why would someone from Japan go onto a .ie website to talk about how their everday life is in their own country?

The servers being in Ireland does not mean that the majority of users are Irish or that it's an Irish forum.

Good survey. But just because the website is accessed via Irish IP addresses doesn't mean they are Irish browsers. I know a few Arabs based in Ireland who pop up in every Israel thread.

Fascinating. What percentage of the Irish are Muslim? Make sure you don't include foreign Muslims residing here.

But what have IP addresses got to do with a survey in which people stat they are living in Ireland?

Anyway, clearly this is now a Maltese forum since that's where Dev spends all his time.

Your CSO link states the number of Muslims in Ireland.
How many of those are Irish Muslims and how many of those are foreign born Muslims that live here. Simple questions.

No good, there was no option in the poll for people from Cork.

    http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/boards.ie

62.4% of the traffic to this site comes from Ireland.
Next is 7.5% from the UK and 5.8% from the US, probably largely due to the diaspora and the common language. Either way the traffic from Ireland is larger than any other country and even larger than every other country combined. If that doesn't make it Irish, then I don't know what will.

When your 'talking' to someone online and all you see is a username does it really matter what race, nationality, colour etc they are?

I would hazard a guess many of those people are Irish living abroad though.
There are forums for Islam, life in Japan and the Russian language, for example.
That's true but they're more for those Irish communities here and abroad. The Japanese and Russian language forums for example wouldn't be all that appealing to native speakers of those languages.
I'd even hazard a guess that White Irish are a minority on this site.
I'd bet money you're wrong. It would be a statistical anomaly for that to happen in a predominantly white Irish country.
Ireland is there for the benefit of all nations of the world.
No it's not, Ireland is the territory of the Irish republic, which is an imaginary construct to manage the needs of the people that live on this island. Why should we benefit the rest of the world?

Some people spend way to much time getting worked up about things that only they think are important. Honestly, if you think boards.Ie is anything but Irish it's only so it can fit into what ever messed up agenda you have managed to dream up in your own head.

Depends on the user name really, if it implies that the user is both a woman, single and into geeks, the proximity is really important to me (and being Irish implies a greater chance at proximity). On the other hand, if the username is facekicker, then proximity is still important, but for the opposite direction.

I'm merely stating a fact: this is not an Irish website. People of all nationalities and races post here, whether they are based in Ireland or not. I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm merely stating a fact.

Still though, in a democratic sense the majority are Irish and I would say the vast majority (including non-Irish citizens) are probably drawn here by Irishness. Either they're family originated from Ireland or they're looking for information on Ireland.

Would you agree with the statement "Ireland for the Irish"?
I wouldn't agree with it, I don't think it makes any sense.

Who the **** says "Ireland for the Irish"? If this isn't an Irish website, then Reddit is not an American website.
just because the website is accessed via Irish IP addresses doesn't mean they are Irish browsers. I know a few Arabs based in Ireland who pop up in every Israel thread.
I'm not sure how the second sentence "proves" the first.
Fascinating. What percentage of the Irish are Muslim? Make sure you don't include foreign Muslims residing here.
There are Irish muslims (not including muslim immigrants) - not many, but they're here. I know two Cork-women who married muslims and converted.

What would it take for Boards to be an Irish website in your view?

Boards is based in Ireland, and the majority of those who post here are based in Ireland. Seems like an Irish website to me.

When people say its an Irish forum they mean its predominantly Irish people who use it. The social conventions, humour, topics etc all relate to Ireland and Irish people.

In that poll 62 % of posters live in Ireland, I'd wager the majority of those who dont are Irish people living abroad.

Add to that the fact its registered on a .ie domain, was founded by Irish people living in Ireland and is owned and operated by an Irish company operating out of Ireland. Pretty much makes it an "Irish website".

What is the statement trying to mean or say? What's the context? Ireland for the irish for example shouted at an international rugby game is very different to someone in a celtic jersey shouting it at a love ulster parade.

So by your logic (and I use the term lightly), no country can truly claim their national identity, because they have people from other countries and various backgrounds living there, no?

You sir, are talking absolute guff!

Mod: OP, if you started this thread out of genuine curiosity, then yes Boards is an Irish site. But it is open to all people, of every race and nationality. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to post. Diversity is part of what makes this site great.
If however, you started this thread with some other hidden agenda then I suggest you drop it now.
