    Tom had 30 at the start. Tim had 6.
    Tom gives Tim 12. This leaves Tom with 18, and Tim with 18.
    Tim gives Tom 12. This leaves Tim with 6, and Tom back to 30. 30 is 5 times more than tim! :)

    I'd show my work, but it got messy.

    no. If Tim has only 6, he cannot give Tom 12?

    Tom = x Tim = y

    If

    x - 12 = y + 12 tom gives tim 12 so x = y + 24.

    If Tim gives tom 12 tom now has x + 12 and this is 5 times what Tim has left ( y - 12 )

    x + 12 = 5 ( y - 12 )

    y + 24 + 12 = 5y - 60

    24 + 12 + 60 = 5y - y

    96 = 4y

    24 = y

    x = y + 24 thus x = 24 + 24 = 48

    Tom has 48 and Tim has 24

    I thought these were sequential transactions. So tim would first have six, then after the first transaction he would have 18.
