Clearing snow on public road.

I'm living at the top of a hill served by a local (L) road. This road rises continuously 200 ft in approx 1/4 mile. Ther are 5 more houses down the hill. If cold weather and snow gets serious I would like tomake an effort to clear the road of any snow before it gets compacted as the road becomes impassable. Getting access to our houses otherwise involves a 3mile round trip and my neighbours must descend the hill in dangerous conditions.During the cold snap a few years ago all the neighbour had to leave
their cars in local pub car park. 2 of the houses have elderly occupants and the rest have young kids going to school. I have equipment to clear the snowbut should I bother? Council around here are hopeless. They brought in contractors last time to spread grit with lime spreaders but fired 90% into ditches. Never modified spreaders to throw grit down instead of out. Am I being foolish?

You're being a Good Neighbour, and it'll be appreciated by the people that count !!!!

    F*** the council pencil pushers.

i'd say fair play to you, make sure "officially" you don't know who did it and ask the neighbours to say the same
