Moving from Sky

Just been informed that the new house i'm moving to doesn't allow sky (no satellites to upset the posh neighbours:rolleyes:).

I'm seriously p*ssed off that i'll be tied to UPC now.

So put my mind at ease - is it as user friendly as SKY? Are the controls as easy to use? Does the box freeze and prick around?

Reading some horror stories about it and i'm nearly ready to do without TV rather than let UPC back near my house again.

Depends which box you get. Not all UPC boxes are created equal and there are four different platforms - Horizon, Mediabox, NTL, and Chorus all in use in the network.

Horizon is the newest. You have to order it specifically, it incorporates a broadband router and HD channels are included. Very nice interface, but its had some teething problems which you can read about in the thread.

Mediabox was the "regular" UPC platform until recently. I have this and find it fairly stable. The EPG used to take a very long time to load but not any more. Its usable although not as nice as Sky. The biggest problem I have with this is that sometimes, when I've set a programme to record, it doesn't and the box is frozen afterwards. Other than that it rarely locks up during usage. On the Mediabox platform, you have to pay separately for HD, though you will get the RTÉ/TG4/BBC/UTV HD channels included.

NTL and Chorus are legacy platforms which you shouldn't get. AFAIK the only way you'll end up with a Chorus box now as a new customer is get MMDS in an ex-Chorus region. Which won't apply to you as your not allowed a dish anyway.

Thank you for the honest answer.

I think the wife has ordered the top package of broadband and tv, so i presume we will get the latest box. I've also heard horror stories about the remote control being pretty useless also....is that true?

Pity to leave sky as the product is brilliant - and i hate craig doyle so it pains me to go to UPC!!

The remote for the Horizon box is awesome. The button layout is much better than the previous one and very well designed imho. I just wish the qwerty keyboard on the back would work as a keyboard with my smart tv :(
