I want a MacBook air for college for everyday things like writing essays, spreadsheets etc. I wouldnt be using it for gaming or editing at all. The main reason why I want a MacBook Air is the battery life as my university library doesnt have a single socket meaning I cant charge a laptop if Im there for the day. Plus microsoft laptops never last for me( I have gotten about 15 months max out of my last 4 windows laptops and thats without dropping or handling them in a bad way)

But I want to use my MacBook for at least 3/4 years and was wondering should I upgrade the RAM to 8gb to future proof it? Or is it a useless waste of money

TBH, if you are planning on holding onto the Macbook Air for the length of time you are anticipating, for the €100 extra, I'd recommend getting 8GB. You won't have any trouble with 4GB if you are just planning to use MS Word or Excel, for sure, but over the timespan that you are anticipating, applications are only going to get more RAM hungry, and with a MBA, since you cannot expand it later, might as well do it now if you plan on keeping it for the long haul.

Thats great. Thank you so much. I couldnt find any decent info on which RAM was best. Plus with my student discount its only an extra €89

I got the "free" 8gb RAM upgrade when I bought a refurbished Air last year, from using the 4gb Air, I can see a noticeable difference in performance.

OP I would certainly recommend you go with the 8gb version.
