With only one race venue in the Republic on 2nd March (according to CI events calendar), will the A3 Cycleways Cup race in Navan attract 250 - 300 riders? Usually, there's a race in Munster which attracts 80 to 100 A3s.

If they all travel up the country, it'll be fun for the commissaires...

Can't see them allowing anything like a field of that size - UCI limit is 200 and they are usually on fully closed roads. CI have specified a limit of 140 for A4s and even that's way too many for a lot of circuits. There's an absolute limit of 80 in Ulster (60 on some circuits) and that's what we could end up with down here if we're not careful.

Is that for UCI ranked races or all road races?

if you take a typical old N road or R road, 100 max if you are lucky to have good enough roads, for the larger A4 or A3 category.

A couple of years ago the IVCA started splitting their races if more than 100 signed on. CI rules allow promoters to do the same, splitting the prizes between the 2 races. Of course if you already have a A1/A2 race on, then depending on circuit splitting an A3 or A4 race may not be practical as the races may end up catching each other up. Again promoters can restrict numbers on a first-come, first-served basis

Early season races seem to attract highest numbers so it will be interesting to see what happens. Personally I'm happy to avoid races with such high numbers, particularly given some of the behaviour I witnessed last season. Fortunately I do have other options with smaller fields guaranteed.

The 140 max rider rule is only applicable to a handicap race which includes A4s where they in theory can come in to contact with other cats. There is no max rider rule for A4 specific races or indeed any other cayegory either. The UCI 200 max rider role afaik only applies to UCI races [although 208 started World Champs last year].Im sure organisers/promoters can put caps on field sizes depending on risk assessment but as far as rules go,theres no max.

Braodford Race will take place on March 2nd. Three races down for decision.

    A1/2. 120KM
    A3/Junior. 100km
    A4. 64KM.

Slight change to usual circuit with an extra 3 miles on the lap and an additional hill.
