Listening to a few guys in work earlier talking about boxes which can replace UPC for which I will be out of contract next month.

I'm not really familiar with these things and, at the risk of getting divorced a lot earlier than planned, I was hoping to get some advice one what if any boxes would meet the requirements of having the following:
    • Main terrestrial channels (Eastenders and all those dammed cooking programs
    • Sports channels for footie and horseracing
    • a pause facility
    • the ability to record
    • prorgamming guide
    • functionality to pre plan recording (maybe for a series)

I'm hearing about different boxes that can do some or all of the above eg. N Box / Vu+ Duo2 / Dreambox / Linux based boxes (a bit above my head). Also hearing that the norm is to pay a fee for the box and then an annual subscription of c. €150.

So, in a nutshell I'm wonder what people would recommend? I'm based in Dublin, not hugely tech savvy and would like to get something that is reliable (unlike the dodgy boxes a few years ago which were great but where the codes changed every few weeks and then every few days :-( ).

Also would people recommend buying locally in Dublin or via eBay?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

    Roy

What your talking about, card sharing is illegal and cannot be discussed here. There are threads on several of the boxes, Vu, Amiko etc.

There are several boxes known as combo boxes that will give you the Irish and UK main channels for free using a satellite dish for Uk and an aerial for Irish. Some also have comprehensive recording/pause/scheduling features. See the terrestrial forum for much more detail. Sadly the majority of sports channels are encrypted (Sky) and we cannot discuss illegal ways of circumventing that here.

The legal route would be Saorview and Freesat for the free Irish and UK channels

Freesat+ receiver for the UK channels, dish required. Twin-tuner recording, series linking, 7 day guide etc.
    Channels - http://www.freesat.co.uk/channels
    Receivers - http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/recommended/freesat-plus-with-freetime

Saorview for the Irish channels, aerial required. Twin-tuner recording, series linking, 7 day guide etc. (recording can be unreliable)

    Saorview+ PVR - http://www.walker.ie/products/WP6500TTR-HD.html

No premium sports channels available with either of these options.
