Mt Leinster Gearing

    Hi

I am in this region and was planning on getting in some hill work in crossing this monster :D:confused: I am about 20 km from Bunclody and 25 km from Myshall so could tackle from either direction. Would like to go all the way to the mast but the carpark at the road would be good for a start.

I know this is a very subjective question but what would your reccomended gearing be for someone 90kg...... hope that will be down before the summers end :confused: I am using 53/39 and 12 - 34 cassette at the moment. I have a few chainsets available , compact 50/34 and a triple 30/39/53 but need new bb fitted for theese and would need lbs services for that

My cycling has been down a lot in the last 6/8 weeks because of weather and other reasons but want to get back at it before I quit altogether.

    any thoughts ?

I'm heavier than you and I'd be more than happy to take it on with a 39/34.

I didn't know one could get a 12-34. What group set have you got.

    Hello Brian

Its an mtb cassete shimano hg41 i ,11 t smallest but largest is 34 t.its also 8 speed. I have being checking mapmyride but havent got a gradient section so far. from what ive read here the last part up to the mast is 15 percent gradient and higher ? Theres probably not much difference in a std and compact chainset anyway ?

Stick on the compact, 1:1 ratio :D

Though in all seriousness, your mech may not be able to handle the compact or the triple. What rear mech have you got?

i have an shimano acera mech which is for mtb/hybrid but have not checked if it can handle the compact or triple as of yet. I might give it a go on the standard.......... if i get half way up........ can turn around and freewheel home ;)

Don't think my legs would get me up the Corributt Gap on a standard. I've a compact with a 12-27 cassette and that just about does it.

Unless you're a real savage you'll probably need mtb gearing to get to the transmitter, it;s insanely steep in places

I'd say have a go with the compact and 34t cassette and see how you go

Last (only) time I went up from the Myshall side, I had a 30x28 and wanted more. The compact with the 34t should do nicely though I prefer a triple and a closer spaced cassette.

I was trying to get the gradients from myshall to car park at bottom of transmitter road but not getting it from mapmyride. It would be handier for the compact.....especially if it just bolted on:D:D

I have 9 speed triple levers and a triple chainset especially for this route sourced from boards adverts section over last few months.

this could all be so much easier if i was 70kg and not 90kg :confused:

Perhaps this is what you're looking for, some 'lovely' gradients there all the way ;)

Same here. I've only done the Corabutt gap once and found it tough enough on 30/28. I usually take the second right out of Bunclody and get to the carpark that way, which is handy enough though still a challenge. I'm currently 86kg / 6ft / 47yrs and not hugely fit. I'd want to drop a few kgs to go to the mast from Bunclody, and plan on doing just that this summer.

FWIW, just from a sheer pleasure point of view I prefer going up the Tomduf side and coming back to Bunclody. The descent via Tomduf is a pain between the cattle grids, poor visibility and grotty surface.

I did that ... from km37 to km40 on your route ... on my first sportive. I went the "wrong" way up Mount Leinster in the sportive.
I was on a 52/39/30 triple with 12/25. With the 30/25 bottom gear I had difficulty getting the pedals past top centre ... almost doing track stands.
