What's going on here?

I'm guessing what's going on below is an Otter is using this young ash tree as a scratching post and/or a territorial marker?I spotted this on a stretch of the Grand Canal recently and haven't seen it before.I saw an Otter a fortnight ago, about a kilometre upstream,so know they're here. The Otter is not alone scratching the tree but would also appear to be chewing branches off it too!It could be a large male safeguarding his territory.I haven't seen any spraints along the well worn path to the water's edge, but I do know Mustelidae also use skin scent glands to mark their territories,so when he/she is scratching the tree it's no doubt leaving its scent there too.

It would be a great place to put a trail cam,but the area sees a lot of human traffic and I'd be afraid it would disappear if left there.

Looks like a typical Otter scratching tree alright. They mark territory this way but it's also thought to be good for their claws. Branches often break off in the process.

    Nice spot!
