Is Club hire in Spain a good idea?

I am going to Alicante to play golf for 4 days on 27th February.

Flying with EasyJet from Belfast and clubs seem to be only £35 return which is a huge improvement on Ryanair €100 return ex-Dublin.

What do people think of hiring clubs in Spain?

I like the idea of less transit hassle but there is no cost saving at €55 with ClubsforHire and you are liable to replace the clubs at full retail value if stolen which would easily be in excess off €1,000.

Given that liability and my preference to play with my own clubs & putter, I cannot see why hiring clubs would be a good idea.

Am I missing a piece of logic?

Is Club Hire for 4 days in Alicante a better idea than bringing your own clubs? 10 votes

You have more or less answered your own question. They only extra hassle is carrying your bag from your car/bus to the checkin desk, and then from the baggage area to your hire car/bus and then the same coming back. You will have to get a travel bag/cover also.

I personally would bring my own clubs.

I've gone to Portugal for the past 3 years on a golfing holiday. Always bring my own gear, for me it's a great opportunity to get some serious practise in and I like to do so with my own clubs.

I rented last year and the most playable
Irons they had still felt a bit like shovels that I was hitting high and lacking any real control..
If possible I would bring my own clubs as the irons I used took away from the enjoyment

8 of us rented in Portugal last oct. Was a nice idea to use the latest taylormafe clubs but in the end we all agreed that we would bring our own clubs if we go again. Really missed our own irons especially the wedges, driver and putter. My opinion - bring your own.

heading to portugal for our third trip and we are hiring from clubsforhire again. great service, collect and drop back to the airport.

its a personal preference but all our group are happy to hire and try out different clubs.

Normal hold bag is 35 pound. Golf clubs are 60 pound with easy jet. That's about 70 euro. You can a get a nice set of Taylor made clubs for 45 euro to top of the range stuff for 60 euro.

I've rented sets of clubs in the resorts (hotel) and in the airport (Malaga) and found the Airport ones to be much better quality. IE they were brand new, in fact 2 of the irons had the shrink wrap plastic on the top. You get to choose from a selection of putters in the store.

I get the point people make about not having your own wedge or putter, but it is a great opportunity to road test a different set of clubs. I choose the Mizuno as I was interested in the irons they had and subsequently bought a set on my return to Ireland. If you were going to play in a competition then I see the point about having your own clubs, but if it is a social / fun trip, then the rentals win out for me.

    I would definitely rent again.

+1. Rented sets for myself and Mrs M from Paul McGinley's operation in Faro Airport. Couldn't have been easier. I think it worked out at 120euros for the two sets for the week. About the same price as RyanAir.

One thing that scared me off about bringing my own was a mate getting hosed for an overweight golf bag (RyanAir, Dublin) @ 10euro/kilo excess. Maybe that doesn't happen any more with the new, caring RyanAir?

I would have liked my own putter. Other than that, the set of Razorballz I had were great, better than my own set, tbh.

I'd be inclined to hire out a set because I'd be afraid of losing my own or having issues with damage in transit.
I would be very particular about some of my clubs and for a holiday I'd enjoy it more without any concerns in that regard.

Hiring is ok but becomes expensive if you lose a cover or even a club which can easily happen when you're using buggies.

Take all the covers off as soon as you get the clubs and leave them in the bottom of the bag. Put them back on when you return them.
