    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/export-repayment-scheme/faqs.html
Passenger vehicles (EU Vehicle Category M1), that are registered in the State and on which VRT has been paid, are the only vehicles eligible for the Export Repayment Scheme.

Not forgetting that any such vehicles with an Open Market Selling Price of under €2000 will not qualify for payment either

Does that mean only vehicles eligible are ones that have been imported into the country ( ie imported from uk )

All cars are imported into Ireland as we do not have any assembly plants here.

No. Most new cars here would have paid vrt (there are cars that would have been exempt so no vrt reclaim there, same with people importing their own cars on vrt exemption)

Does that mean most new cars that are bought new here if exported are eligible for a refund ?

Ok, as Colm said above then.
Its the residual vrt you will be claiming back, its worth now, calculated by the OMSP less a considerable clerical fee that often makes it not worth the effort

Every car in Ireland has vet paid on it unless the particular one has an exemption ( disabled scheme, state car etc)

Yes, provided the OMSP is more than 2 grand, and revenue take the first €500 back off the amount.

Plus the examination fees to the NCTS office and payment will be made only to the last registered owner.
They make it very difficult. One vehicle that comes to mind that may be worth exporting is the Range Rover, though with the car tax regime for larger Co vehicles climbing in the UK even that market is getting more difficult.

I was thinking of exporting an x 5 bmw which has 5000 minus the fees to be claim back on it

Just make sure it wasn't a lease car before, as some cars that used to be under lease agreement had vrt deducted in some form of tax relief, etc so it will not be worth your while.

One of my friends got an 08 X5 Msport examined for export, but only got 2200 back, ( instead of 9,000) as the rest of the VRT was previously deducted under the lease agreement.

Seems a lot at €9000. I know a guy who decided to export a 2002 Merc 220 CDI Estate.
The VRT back was €548 and with €500 admin fees and the test fees he was gaining nothing
