when using a usb card reader should you put the card in the reader before plugging to pc? It is one with a usb connector no cable.
The card will not go in all theway is that right?

The card probably won't go in to its full depth.
It doesn't matter whether you put the card in before or after you connect the USB.
Use the 'safely remove' thing is a good idea.

OK thanks One more thing I took out a card before it was ready now the pc will not read it but the camera will. Will a format make it ok for the camera i.e not damage the camera. It is a DSLR new and i do not want to damage it

the computer chkdsk says the card is ok

IF you do not use ,shut down pc, or click icon in tray, green icon, remove/eject usb device ,
Then wait till it says ,
ITS IS NOW safe to remove usb device message,

you,ll likely lose all data on the card ,
    or DAMAGE the card reader.
you put the card in the reader,FIRST,
than plug the reader into the usb port.
it can take 2-5minutes for the card to be fully detected by the pc.
ITS normal for the card to stick out abit from the reader.
    put card in first,
then pc sees reader as a usb external drive ,
with say, a 14 gig drive in it.

    YOUR card reader maybe damaged,
    hence pc cant see card,
    BUT camera can,

usb card reader, in dealz shop,or poundworld 2 euro.

You can't damage the reader by removing the card without using the safe remove function. The card is designed to be physically hot swappable.

What you can damage is the file system on the card, but a reformat would restore it (at the expense of losing the data). A CHKDSK might also work, but there's no guarantee and it might even make things worse by dividing the files into useless fragments.

In the OP's case, the file system on the card is most likely damaged to a point that the PC can't read it but the camera can, it's a regular occurrence.

I think i damaged the card by taking it from the camera when the camera was on. Will a reformat make it safe to use in the camera again? Won't damage camera? I have the data backed up so only worried about camera

It's highly unlikely that the card is physically damaged. If it were, I'd expect that it wouldn't work in anything. A reformat should do the trick.

I got a new card. In the pc there is no icon to safely remove. In my computer i right clicked and clicked eject but it said there was an error with that or similar

The eject option in the right-click menu doesn't always work for memory cards. Depends on the OS version. It's unusual that there wouldn't be a safely remove icon in the tray.

I use card reader ,on pc,
linux, takes 20 seconds to see ,card,
card shows up in filesystem, computer,
    external sd card drive ,
    ALWAYS WORKS Fine .
ON my laptop , with 2 different readers ,
it may take 3 attempts, to load card.
    ie card not detected,
or usb device not working properly,
IE i plug it in 3 times,
or it might work first time,
    on vaio windows 7 laptop.

ONCE i see green icon in system tray,
    i know its after a minute or 2 ,
    menu appears,
    open folder on usb device,
    or scan device.

or i can just open drive d sdcard ,
    USING click my computer,
removable drive d ,when icon appears.

2 readers are from 2 different shops,
    different models,
behave exactly the same on my 2 pcs.

its worth spending 2 euro on a reader ,
    try both cards in it.
NOT a big risk 2 euro.
MAKE sure it has a slot for a camera sd card.

if you want to be really careful,
eject usb device icon, does not work.
shut down pc ,remove the card reader.
    THATS perfectly safe.

if card is not detected after 2-3 minutes ,
    i remove it,
wait minute ,plug it in to a different usb port.

    What os ,are you using,
    win7, windows xp, vista?
