RakNominations - How do people find it a bad idea?

So following the neknominations, there appears to be a new trend emerging known as 'Random Act of Kindness Nomination'. The objective is to perform such an act and nominate someone else to do so. The act could be giving food to the homeless, or paying for someone's shopping, etc.

What's really annoying me is when people say that it's a bad idea because people are only doing it 'attention seeking' or 'fishing for likes'.. Who gives a f*ck?!? It's much, much better then drinking inhuman amounts of alcohol resulting in fatalities. When I've watched these videos back the people receiving the act seem genuinely ecstatic and its brightened up their day.

People always seem to need something to complain about.

Is this not just a rehash of 'pay it forward'?

Stop complaining about people complaining about RaKnominations then.

I thought it was RackNominations, very disappointed

In one of them I saw a girl give food to homeless people without any consideration that, you know, the homeless person may not want to be filmed and viewed by thousands of people. People only do it for likes. Sad.

Well if you actually choose to help people on your free time good for you. But buying a random homeless guy a coffee, filming it and putting it on facebook for everyone to see is kinda cun1y. If you are genuinely a person who likes to help people, you wouldnt look for praise.

I haven't heard anyone bitching about it yet, but if I did they'd be promptly told to stfu. Some people are not happy unless they're giving out about something. I'd much rather see RACnomination take off than hear any more about this neknomination stupidity.

Even more so if it's a viral craze and you are doing it just because the internet told you to do it.

That's very true, but I wonder if the homeless guy gives a **** about motives once someone is actually doing him a good deed.

Either way it's a sad reflection on society that people would only be prepared to do good for the praise they'll get from others.

And they're also not very random. They're actually planned well in advance.

He might be going through a tough period. I seriously doubt a €1,50 coffee from spar is worth being put up online as a homeless person for life

I'm thinking of setting up RAD-niminations, Random Act of Divilment, be more craic than RAK.

Yeah, but the gesture is more valuable than the coffee :P

Is the gesture "Let me exploit your dire situation so I can look altruistic to my 300 virtual friends on the internet"?

No, it's not. It's an act of kindness with both parties benefiting. End of story.

Yeah if i was down on my luck for a short time and homeless, I'd really want a pic or video of me getting given a cup of coffee on the internet for eternity.

My self-esteem would be through the roof.

You can do something nice without recording it and sharing it on Facebook. It's complete attention seeking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

I gave a guy a lift today after he missed his bus. No need for nominations, just be helpful for no reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

    What about Knacknominations then?

You go around all day in a pair of trackies tucked into your socks hassling people at the bus stop for fags, then nominate your mates to do so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,311 ✭✭✭✭weldoninhio

I will guarantee you that if the RAKnomination was that you do something kind, and then post the line "I did my Raknomination today" with no pics or vids, it would never be heard of again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,914 ✭✭✭✭Eeden

I don't know how to feel about RAKnominations. I really, really hate the idea of people "do-gooding" and then bragging about it. But the idea of "shaming" others into doing something good might have some merit.

Again, not happy unless whinging about something. High-horses everywhere. I can see that recording a RAC wouldn't exactly be sensitive towards some people, but I assume that every one of them isn't handing coffee to a homeless person.

My opinion on the matter is one of perspective; I'd much rather see people (selfishly or unselfishly) do something for someone else than a dangerous drinking game that is costing lives.

I'm not sayin' it but these are just as dangerous. You watch as some young lad takes part in one of these and gets neck-JABBED-TA-**** by a syringe-wielding junkie. Mark my words! That's next weeks frowny-face segment on the late late.

It's people looking for attention and needing and wanting to be praised for thier own selfish desire, I do nice things plenty but by filming them you are looking for praise, also the fact that the person your giving to does not want to be filmed, like giving something to a homeless person, just give them the thing don't degrade them or embarrass them by filming it and putting it all over the internet, always find this with those types of videos its not about being nice it's about getting attention.

I am always late to the party, this is the first I've heard of this!

I was in Dublin CC the on Wednesday last and was on Henry/Mary St.
Was heading into Debenhams and outside at the door was a lad, he was about 15. He didn't look like an addict etc, just unwashed and cold, miserable and thin and tbh he reminded me of my oldest child a bit(couldn't have been more than a year in the difference of age).
He was asking people for money saying "Have you anything to spare, I'm starving?"

I did something I have never done before.
I walked straight through Debenhams, into the Ilac and down to McDonalds.
I ordered a Tea and a chicken wrap to take away.
Went straight back to give this to the young lad. While walking back I'm thinking "What if he tells me to F off?".
Anyway, get back outside and the fecker is gone!!
Now, whats the problem, you say?

Well, I have been trying to lose a bit of the Xmas excess and had to eat the fu*king thing myself like an eejit. :o
    True story folks:D

    Karma, eh?

If I decide to do something nice for anyone I certainly won't be broadcasting or taping or filming it and putting it on Facebook or youtoob, if it is worth doing and if people are genuine then there should be no advertising of the act or glory hunting like the WANs on Joe Duffy talking about how they went and paid for someone's shopping in tesco, they went in with their mammy who obviously footed the bill for the stunt!
