Is it just me or are most of red fms presenters far too old for a youth station ?

Steve K on Spin is 40

Age is not an issue if you sound good and deliver

Andy Mac on Beat Drive is well into his 40s.

RedFM is the least youthy station of all the youth stations. Their playlist is far more rock oriented than the others and plays less of the more teeny songs than the other stations.

Most red fm presenters are 30s/40s with some younger.

I do think it's an issue on a CHR youth station though. Even Radio 1 removed their two most popular presenters from the primetime slots ( Moyles & Mills) because of their age. Presenters who are 40+ can't relate to a young audience like a twentysomething can. It's quite indisputable that younger presenters will by default make the station sound fresher and younger.

Steve K may be 40 but nearly all of SPIN's other presenters ( Teresanne, Lauren Kelly, Brian & Dara, Becky Miller, Paul Bonass, Nick K, Riyadh, Martin Guilfoyle etc.) are in their 20s.

There's nothing wrong with having a few older presenters like Steve K and Andy Mac because they're both fantastic at what they do but in the case of Red FM, too many presenters in their 30s/40s and the station does lose a sense of youthfulness.

Tis the nature of the beast. They start off young, but Father Time inevitably catches up with them. Most DJs should be culled at the age of 40. It's a modest proposal.

By the way, Red FM is shyte, be they young DJs or older DJs.

I don't know anyone who listens to it. Prenders on 96 must absolutely wipe them out every morning.

    Information leaking out of Bishopstown?

With a new PD taking over and also going on air at breakkie too there will have too be an over haul of the show's, slot's times etc etc. its just common sence not insider trading or anything lads.

Prenders will still wipe them out. Didn't the redfm talk show switch back to night time after he came back from time off after the incident on the plane.

They are completely different audiences though, housewives listen to 96fm,red fm aim for a younger demographic so putting vb on in the morning was never going to work, his listenership is higher at night id say.

He probably has a better audience at night compared to 96fm in the same timeslot but 96fm pretty much wipes the floor with Red fm in every demographic overall regardless of age, gender or occupation.

He's marginally better than Philip bourke but 4 hours is just too long for a programme at that time I think. It's on at work and I don't even hardly hear him, just the same old jingles, rehashed entertainment news, crappy comps and generic pop music on repeat.
Maybe at 29 I'm too old for it I dunno.

FM104 and 96FM have 5 hour work day shows before their equivilant drive show started.

96FM also has Ken Tobin on from 12-4.

If they were to change the deejays there, would Kc not be too old for red also? Hopefully he brings lenny back with him as the lads were funny out on the rooster show during my college time in cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Clerk Maxwell

After news of Neil joining today, it's safe to say that he will be the oldest in redfm!!

How old is kc? 32/33? Not too old imo. Don't think lenny is coming with him.

And been replaced by BUCKS??? Joke!! Stevie may not be Larry gogan on the mic ( very few are ) but bucks is poor at best!!! Not really holding much hope for red if Dave macs on drive followed by bucks not matter how strong the morning shows are

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,523 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

Hope Dave Mac is staying, he's a good drivetime presenter imo.

Not sure what's happening with the afternoon slot. If they're trying to get rid of the "older" presenters Philip Bourke could be in a spot of bother. Colm O'Sullivan has recently left the breakfast slot on Spin South West so maybe its his

You could be onto something there as ads on air saying that "an all new redfm" is on the way in April and could be gone.

Who the hell is cian twomey? And what's he going to be doing on red? That Jason coughlan fella on the rooster is meant to be a comedian too and he's about as funny as the varooka on my big toe.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,158 ✭✭✭✭hufpc8w3adnk65

Never heard of either of them... Are they both joining or currently working there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Hang on your man Jason coughlan is going to be on with KC ? What kind of crap is that ? I know some people don't like Lenny but compared to your man Jason he is a comedic genius. I like Lenny BTW.

Shame the KC and Lenny double act is over. Would've loved to have them back doing breakfast together. But I guess if Lenny didn't want to work in Cork anymore then there was no forcing him.

Have to say, as much as I'm disappointed to see Vic Barry and Stevie G go (listened to them a lot back before I moved to Limerick for college), I can see why it's happening and partially agree with both decisions. (I'd like them to keep Stevie doing more specialist stuff at weekends and I think Vic's show could have stayed where it was and been a sort of "After Dark!" styled show to companion Prendeville's)

I'm really excited to see how this new line-up works. I've been wanting Red to do SOMETHING for a few years now, nice that things are finally moving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

It will be interesting alright if np brings the listeners with him, alot of his 96fm fans have never turned on red and wouldn't even know where it is on the dial.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,628 ✭✭✭Femme_Fatale

Not sure what the "age" thing is about. Once they're not all bland like on 96FM, does it matter? KC is about 40.
Really disappointed and surprised at Stevie G losing the drive-time show. He was a popular presenter - I don't get it.

Oh yeh the later evening show I mean.

The only show, apart from Black On Red, that I'd listen to on the station.

Jeez, poor Vic. Not a major fan of him but he's a better presenter than some others in there. Hope he'll have something else lined up.

Would it be beyond the realms of possibility for him to get Prendeville's 96 gig?

As far as I remember a few of the Radio Friendly dj's came over to Red Fm in 1999.

Radio Friendly 104.6 fm was one of the most popular pirate stations in Cork

I still have old recordings on tape.

The groovy gravy show and the soul show were popular.

Stevie G and Greg and Shane were regulars along with a guy called Mucka.

I think Red Fm is a great station I live in the burren always getting a great signal in the car.
