Wifi range

Having had a crap wifi service for months we got a replacement technicolor router, which has improved things a bit while within close range of the router. Signal drops when more than 30 feet from the router. Router is in a hallway so only one door and no walls in the way. Is this acceptable (provider says yes) or should we be telling the provider to give us another, better, one? We're picking up free wifi from a shop across the road which is about 100 feet away! Surely that can't be acceptable?
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers.

Your router could be set to a crowded channel maybe?
Download an app called "wifi analyzer" on your phone and it will show you all the different wifi signals in your proximity and what channel they are on.
If your wifi is on the same channel as other wifi connections you can manually set a different channel in the technicolor router settings page (192.168.1.1)

All the UPC kit is shocking, dont waste your time asking them for a new one, you'll only get more junk.

Go to argos or somewhere and pick up a wireless access point.

thanks for the replies. There are a couple of more wifi networks on my channel, but it's a fairly built up area and all channels seem to have a few networks so doesn't look like I can avoid that.
I will have a look at the access point.
    cheers
