    In general, all new motor vehicles and vehicles brought into Ireland are subject to Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and must be registered with the Revenue Commissioners.

    Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is based on the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of the vehicle. The OMSP depends on factors such as the market value, Co2 emissions, mileage, spec and year of the vehicle.

    You can find a vehicles Co2 figure from the UK V5 registration document.

    VRT Rates:

    CO2 emissions levels VRT rates
    Band A1 0 - 80 grams per kilometre 14% of OMSP (minimum €280)
    Band A2 81 – 100 grams per kilometre 15% of OMSP (minimum €300)
    Band A3 101 – 110 grams per kilometre 16% of OMSP (minimum €320)
    Band A4 111 – 120 grams per kilometre 17% of OMSP (minimum €340)
    Band B1 121 – 130 grams per kilometre 18% of OMSP (minimum €360)
    Band B2 131 – 140 grams per kilometre 19% of OMSP (minimum €380)
    Band C 141 – 155 grams per kilometre 23% of OMSP (minimum €460)
    Band D 156 – 170 grams per kilometre 27% of OMSP (minimum €540)
    Band E 171 – 190 grams per kilometre 30% of OMSP (minimum €600)
    Band F 191 – 225 grams per kilometre 34% of OMSP (minimum €680)
    Band G over 225 grams per kilometre 36% of OMSP (minimum €720)

    And paying the vrt (€3800) which is still a good bit cheaper than the same car in ROI.

    Is it much hassle to go through the vet process?

    That's coming to around €13,500 IF you can get a decent exchange rate. Doesn't look like spectacular value for what appears to be an ES 320d.

    There are cars already imported to Ireland, on Carzone, for not much more, and you are likely to negotiate a better discount locally, along with having a local dealer for warranty if anything does go wrong. Can't see any 320d 181ps models with similar mileage, but there are a couple of ED models, which have less power (163ps), but better spec (ED's are SE specification so Climate and Parking Sensors).

    There's a nice looking 318d Touring with Leather and the same mileage, for not much more. Missing 40 horses, but a more attractive proposition in my eyes - but not everyone wants a wagon.

    Im looking at getting a new car and the revenue site gives so many of the same model and specs wrote as a same sentence but when u go into them the price varies up to 4k.

    is there a number I can call to get a better quote if I give a chassis number or something

    It's based on the co2 figure on the v5. You need to make sure the value matches

    quick question, if i am buying a vw from japan, how do i find out vrt, if in vrt calculator there is no vw in japanese import car list ??

    Always found this amusing, under cars from Japan it only lists Japanese manufacturers.
    Unless its fairly new with a high omsp, it should be fairy close to an Irish or uk version. I'd probably go with the highest spec you can on an Irish version and assume that they'll think an automatic (if it is one) is worth more again.
    I'd assume that it would have proof of co2 emissions that's acceptable to revenue? If not it's the top vrt rate.

    Thats 2.0 petrol automatic, 2006 vw touran. Just got a quote, it is 3 k till dublin port. Dont know how reasonable that deal. Market price is around 7 k, with 1.6 petrol., just need to figure out how much will cost to put it on the road, thinking of make some penny's, not loose tho.

    Would have thought a soon to be 10 year old touran would be worth way less than that.
    Also make sure it's actually 7 seat, as it's not standard.

    You need to factor in import duty and vat as well as vrt.

    Interesting, you wrote that the maximum costs is 720 euro but I'm paying 761 to import my 1992 MX-5 1.6

    That's a minimum figure for band G or unknown emissions. €2000X36%

    dsg only on 1.6 fsi and 2.0 tdi afaik

    i had a seat 2.o fsi with a tip 6 speed box and it calved at 100km,the gearbox code was 09g avoid it like the plague if it has this box

    Does anybody know how revenue VRT calculator results vary depending on mileage vs age?

    i.e would I pay more VRT on a high mileage, but younger car, than a low mileage, but older car, of the same value?

    The VRT is a percentage of the OMSP, so would be the same as long as the estimated value is the same.
    There are formulas ref depreciation due to mileage which determine the OMSP.

    It would be quicker to use the VRT calculator sand play around with a few different mileages.

    Note that different years of the same model may have different co2 figures which may affect the VRT rate.

    Thanks Colm.
    I was just wondering in general, if I had say 10k to spend on a car to import form the uk, in terms of VRT, would I be better going for a high mileage one or maybe one thats a few years older but will less miles, so the same selling price in the uk.

    I suppose it boils down to how accurate people have found the adjustment factors for age and mileage in the VRT OMSP calculator to be?

    The difference isn’t that big, and it’s likely you’d be importing something with a low VRT rate anyway. Get the best car you can, don’t focus on getting one over on Revenue :)
