Car insurance acceptance criteria

I received a letter from Liberty insurance today saying the following
"Unfortunately we are currently unable to offer a renewal quotation for your private motor vehicle due to our acceptance criteria"
Can anyone tell me what this means and if I will be able to get cover from any other company?

Did they say which criteria you no longer meet?

    What car are you driving?

@djimi: No, it was just that sentence no explanation. I have had a few accidents in the last few years. I don't think it has anything to do with my car which is an opel corsa.

It means they don't want your business - it's nothing personal, and it'll have no bearing whatsoever on whether any other company will take you. Don't worry, do keep shopping around.

But will any other insurance company take me if I've been refused a renewal?

Yes, but it might take some legwork.

yes, it makes no difference to any other company, it's not like your policy was cancelled and who's to say you weren't already looking at alternative insurers? - which you should have been. I don't think I've ever taken a renewal in my life, always shop around, new customers almost always get a better deal than existing

If Liberty are your current insurer and you took out the policy providing all the correct information ie nothing was fraudulent/false then they are legally bound to provide you with renewal terms.

What you need to do is call them tomorrow and tell them you have been in touch with the financial ombudsman and that you were told that Liberty as your current insurer, had to offer you a quote because it is a legal requirement to have car insurance in Ireland.

    Call their bluff.

They are trying to get rid of you easily and without fuss so dont let them.

If you have had a couple of accidents then the chances of any other underwriter taking you on are remote so I would not let them off anyway.

It doesn't bode well though. If you have a history of multiple claims you may not get any reasonable quotes.

So if I am refused the renewal on basis of accidents I may not get cover elsewhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

You may get cover but you may not like the cost.

Best thing is to not worry now, get onto brokers, ring around the insurance companies themselves and sus it out.

They'll just quote silly money - they've already made it clear that they don't want the business.

If you are refused motor insurance

Individual insurers have the right to refuse you cover, but they must provide you with a reason for the refusal should you ask for one. However, even though you have been refused cover, you are entitled to go to the Declined Cases Committee of the Irish Insurance Federation who will obtain an insurance quotation for you. In order for the Committee to consider your case you must first have sought and been refused quotations in writing from at least three insurers.
The Financial Services Ombudsman deals with complaints and disputes between policyholders and their insurance companies when the company's complaints procedure fails to resolve the problem. The Financial Services Ombudsman's decision is binding, if you are unsatisfied with the decision you may take your case to the High Court.

The Insurance Information Service (IIS) is an information and complaints telephone service operated by the Irish Insurance Federation (IIF), which many insurance companies in Ireland belong to. Its purpose is to answer policyholders' questions and help them resolve problems. It has no binding powers and complaints that cannot be resolved are generally referred to the Financial Services Ombudsman.

Just out of interest, how many crashes over how many years are we talking?

(Obviously don't answer if you don't want to say)

The problem for the op is that he has had a couple of accidents over the last few years which means he likely has no NCB so most insurers wont want to know.

XSDirect is an option of course but with a 3k claims excess and a history of claims, would the OP be willing to take that risk?

I was thinking that myself. Still, a couple of years rebuilding the NCB and being particularly careful not to drive into things might be just what the doctor ordered.

I spoke to a friend that works for Chill Insurance. There is one option that actually is less than what I currently give to liberty. XSDirect also would work.

If you have an open claim, you're pretty stuck!! XSDirect no longer offer business in Ireland and they would have been the goto guy in this scenario.
