    Hi all,
i have a problem with a Logbook for my car - and its previous owner.

The thing is i bought a car on the 25th of January, since that day i am waiting for the logbook and still nothing. He is not answering my calls or texts, i don't know if he posted the logbook to the office or not...

The other problem is that (my fault) i do not have that small stripe from his logbook, forgot to take it :/

    What can i do now?
I really need that car to travel to work (via m50) and i am not able to use it without the logbook / insurance or tax on my name... (NCT is valid).

    Please help.
    Arthur

You can check here if Shannon have received the logbook from the previous owner:

    https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/start.do?page=welcome

Alternatively you can ring the Department of Transport in Shannon and ask them if they have received it for processing. As the car was only bought on 25th January it is possible that it may not be processed yet, they are usually busy processing new car registrations this time of year.

I did the online check... the last update was in november. And when i called the office i was on hold for quite a while and they said "nothing here".

That may mean that the previous owner hasn't bothered posting it to them. Do you have their address?

Some more information in this thread about getting a new logbook where the previous owner didn't send the old one off. It involves getting a declaration from a dealer and Gardaí as well as Peace Commissioner.

    On a more helpful note.

I don't see why you can't use it to drive to work. Just transfer your insurance over to the car. Tax doesn't need to be transferred into your name as you seem to think? As long as the car is taxed it is fine. (even if it's not, in the unlikely event that you do get pulled, you can say you just bought the car and it'll be back-taxed anyway so I'd imagine you'll be OK)

Another thing, that "little strip" from the log book is useless, the only reason it's there is so that the address is visible to the postman through the envelope window ;)

Oh, and if the seller hasn't posted the Logbook yet, a few trips up and down the M50 might do no harm with regard to the toll bridge! :P

The thing is i have no insurance on my name as this is my first car :) and tax is out for the last 3 months. I think he never bought one as the cars last change to the owner was in november :O

You can insure it, the question posed by an insurer is "Do you, or will you, own the car". You've paid for it, so you do own it as far you're concerned. Tax isn't a big deal once you can show you've just the bought the car, as your insurance cert will be very recent that would be evidence to any reasonable Garda. You're not the only person to have bought a car with no tax, once you give the Garda the impression that you're honest and will tax it as soon as the book arrives you'll be fine. You're only liable for tax since January, so they can't seize the car. The worst that can happen is a fine for non-display of tax by a traffic warden who you can't explain your case to, the simple solution is don't park on street until you get the logbook.

As said above, you've been waiting 6 working days. That is nothing by Shannon's standards. It's more than likely sitting in a big pile of logbooks in their inbox, which is why they say they don't have it. They're not going to search through hundreds of envelopes to find your logbook. Don't panic until it hits 3-4 weeks, 3 weeks is (unfortunately) an acceptable turnaround by Shannon.

In another recent thread several posters said it took 2 weeks or so to get the logbook.
Online doesn't update realtime either, last time I bought a car I think it was updated about the same day I actually received the logbook.

So i can go to for example to AXA and insure the car even though i am not an "official" owner, but i have the car and keys? That would be great.
