Any one here listen to his show? He can be a bit of a smug git at times but I do enjoy his show quite a bit.

He has an audience of 114,000 which is very impressive, it's the most listened to show on local radio in the country (I think), his numbers would be quite acceptable if he was national yet he's confined to the south of the country only.

Would he have made it nationally if he didn't watch Snakes on a Plane with Seamus Heaney? He did some tv work, locally, on The Apprentice: You're Fired and maybe more.

    Thoughts anyone?

a pro. with a great production team. knows that plenty of people in Cork 'hate him' but he plays to that. 114k in Cork is huge.

Rumours around Douglas lately has it he is leaving soon, to do what i don't know but rumours are saying he will be going national either tv or radio...

he is taking a lot of his holidays lately, and rather than just sticking colm in there they are trying out pj coogan this week, which in my opinion hints they are trying to find a replacement (especially after their failed run of maeve higgins and others trying it out a few years back)

There is talk of TV3, God love him if ITV Ireland takes off.

Councillor ken o Flynn mentioned tv3 last week to neil but nothing more was said so there must be something to it.

Coogan is annoying with his personal politics, I thought tv and radio presenters weren't allowed their personal views with the new law introduced last year. Stay neutral Coogan if you ever read this ;)

yeah every topic that comes up he has to give his own opinion, and push his own agenda constantly, its beyond irritating!

Christ, one of the good things about leaving cork was not having the listen to that wanker (does it count as personal abuse as he has been caught doing it in public)

I listen daily to neil. Tbh I dont think tv suits him hes great on the radio not always the brightest spark but a good listen and amazing figures. I would have thought whit utv ireland setting up next year they would have used him in cork studios to do a political show on tv and keep the morning show on utvs 96fm. Neil is pure cork be a loss whitout him and Pj would be a bad replacement I couldnt listen for the last 2 weeks awful stuff.

Source??? There was no unusual sign off today as far as I can remember. He did thank listeners twice and said he truly loved them with a quiver in his voice twice which struck me as odd at the time.

A quiver? Are you sure he didn't have a mag to hand?

CONTROVERSIAL talk show presenter Neil Prendeville has reportedly quit his job at Cork 96fm after 'contract discussions broke down'.

The radio presenter shot to notoriety four years ago following a humiliating episode when he exposed himself and masturbated on board an Aer Lingus flight.

Staff at the Cork radio station were informed by email at close of business this evening that Mr Prendeville would no longer be working with them.

They were told that contract discussions which had been ongoing had “failed to reach agreement” and that he was leaving.

Sources last night said Mr Prendeville had not been asked to work out any notice and that fellow dj, PJ Coogan - who had filled in for the outspoken host on previous occasions while he was on holidays - has been drafted in as a temporary replacement for the popular morning show which averages around 100,000 listeners.

CEO of Cork 96FM, Kieran McGeary is currently away on holidays.

Speculation mounted last night that Mr Prendeville may be considering a career move to television with UTV setting up a new station next year. Other speculation circled around a possible move to rival Cork radio station, Red FM.

It is understood that Mr Prendeville had taken “a massive cut” in his salary following his high-profile incident in 2010 when he was witnessed masturbating on board a flight.

Mr Prendeville afterwards explained that he had consumed painkillers and alcohol throughout the day before boarding the flight and said he remembered nothing of the events.

After being off air for some time afterwards, he wept during an apology to his listeners on his return and explained that alcohol had been the root of the situation.

At that time, Mr Prendeville said he had been punished enough - though admitted not everyone would agree - and said that “humanity took a backseat” in the tabloid coverage of the allegations and their focus on his family.

He claimed his children had been targeted by journalists.

Asked how he would have covered that story if it had happened to somebody else, Mr Prendeville said he would treat it differently than he would have and would not persecute that person's family, whatever about hounding the individual.

“All I can do is apologise and ask for a chance,” he said then, adding that he had become a more reflective person with a different outlook on life in the wake of the controversy.

Mr Prendeville's former colleague PJ Coogan told the Irish Independent that he was “shocked and surprised” at Mr Prendeville's departure, saying they had been “colleagues for 25 years and friends for longer.”

“I wish him every success in whatever venture he goes for,” he said, adding that he was not in a position to comment any further on the incident.

Efforts to contact Mr Prendeville were unsuccessful

On par with Kennedy going to 98FM. He will be hard to replace alright (hopefully 96FM will do a better job than 104 did anyway)

I wonder if that speculation in the indo about UTV came from this very thread?

Safe to presume there will be a Pat Kenny effect where listeners will "move the dial" and follow him across the airwaves?

I'd be sure of it. I can see Red running a big advertising campaign aswell.

the only thing is i have always felt "too old" listening to red fm,

like they were aiming at the 12-19 age bracket, even their music is more dance than older/rock...etc which is more of what i like,

which begs the question, will red fm allow prendeville play music like dire straights, and his usual stuff during the show to keep the current prendeville fans happy, or will he play the chart/dance stuff and risk them tuning out during the show?

I have never listened to RedFM. Like yourself I just presumed it was aimed at young(er) people than I.

Neils format brings in the numbers so to tinker with a winning formula would be risky. Saying that I wouldn't mind them trying out a female co-anchor. Just to add a bit of variety. But Cork being small I doubt it would work well enough.

I'm wondering how they'll work the Neil/Vic Barry balance, they used to fill similar roles a few years ago, though recently Vic's changed hugely, don't really understand what his show is any more.

So what's the bet PJ is on tomorrow? I can't imagine Neil doing what he would regard as the height of bad manners and not say goodbye.
