Renting a van for moving home - under age - second driver

Hi everyone. I am currently a second driver for my dad. We're gonna be moving houses soon and we are looking to rent a van. He most likely has to go to work that day so only I could drive. I have a full license. I know rentals don't allow under 21s at least to rent but because I am a second driver and I know that we can transfer our insurance, would I be allowed to drive the van? P.s. please move my thread if it is in the wrong section. Thanks a lot for your time :)

Extremely, extremely unlikely. If they don't allow drivers under a certain age, generally the only way around is transferring fully comp insurance where the driver is the main driver. Its also unlikely your insurer would allow you to drive on a temp transfer to a van either, if under 21 and a named driver.

I'd guess no. They don't put in those restrictions for the fun of it. You need to make sure you have valid insurance in force for you to drive the van.

I'm reading it as your a named driver on your Dad's insurance policy for another vehicle. The insurance company is unlikely to transfer that policy to the rental van as the ownership will remain with the rental company. Open to correction on that.

The rental company will have their own insurance for the van subject to the conditions of rental - i.e. "don't allow under 21s".

The only definite answer will be from the insurance company - but I'd imagine the rental company could look for their own damages from you if you breach the rental agreement and there was a claim.

Alright. Thanks for clearing it up. It's just that I've read somewhere that it was possible but the query in the thread I read it from was unfinished so I wanted to make sure. It was also a few years ago so it was even less reliable. Thanks again.

Hertz want to see driving licenses for all drivers and tried to charge me €100 for a second driver.

Just tried it now. Unfortunately, I have to be at least 21 to join. Dang, I thought it was the solution to my problem. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help guys. Looks like there isn't a way around this. :(
