Tyres for an MX-5

So, I've just bought a 2006 Mk3 MX-5 1.8, and it's in great nick all round, but has  Triangle tyres fitted  so they'll have to go at the earliest possible opportunity!

Looking around on the net a lot of people have good things to say about the Uniroyal Rain Sport 2, so rang Discount Tyres in Blanch and inquired about them, but apparently they've been discontinued and replaced with (tada!) the Rain Sport 3. Unfortunately they can't get them in for a few weeks, so he offered me the option of Hankook Ventus Prime 2, saying they would be as good in the wet and are quieter (a bit cheaper too.)

I Google'd them and found mixed reviews, but I'm always wary of such online reviews as they tend to attract more -ve reviews than +ve ones, so I thought I'd ask here.

I'll ask on mx5ireland as well if and when I get my account approved.

Who puts triangle tyres on a car that's all about handling???? Oh and is RWD.

I've had the Hankooks in 15", I was very happy with them. They did everything asked of them with no scares.

At least anything you put on will be an improvement. Running on bare rims with no tyres would probably be quieter and safer than Triangles :pac:

I had ventus prime on the astra when I got it and they were ok but when they wore down near the marker but still a good bit of thread on them they would just spin in the wet giving it any kind of acceleration coming of a roundabout and that was a 1.3cdti so didn't exactly have a lot of power to put down on the road. So I'd say they are an ok tyre and better than a lot of crap sold but I'd consider the Goodyear excellence I have now or Bridgestone tarnazas far better. Hankook are a good budget tyre though.

Hmmm, think I might stick with the original plan and go with the Rain Sport 3's. The Rain Sport 2's seem to be a very popular choice on the mx5 ireland forum, and other mx5 fora too, so I assume the Rain Sport 3's will be even better.

I'll have to drive very carefully for the next 2 or 3 weeks :D

Have a look at Bridgestone sport max, put a set on the fathers car, also RWD, and couldn't get over how good they are wet and dry compared to the conti's on it before. Very reasonably priced too off camskill

My Da had a set of Yokohamas on his, could not be shifted. Can't recall the model.
