Can anyone recommend a decent cycling app.

I was looking at strava but it keeps recommending upgrading.

Would anyone recommend the app and what's the story with the upgrade

Strava is used by a lot of people. I find it very good.

The upgrade if for "premium" features. The basic strava is fine. Mine never bugs to upgrade. I just see it in certain places every now and then.

I got a free 30 day premium trial on strava which started yesterday, so far it's not gave me the desire to actually pay for premium.

I use mapmyride tried strava for a bit but found the details from mapmyride better. They are much the same but a matter of preference. Strava has a much bigger user base so if you are looking to compare against others strava will have a little more competition for you

I use IpBike app on my phone to pick up ANT+ signals from my speed, cadence and heart monitors. It also uses GPS to map my route. I upload the data onto TrainingPeaks, where I can see all of my data in numerical lists and in graphics. I upload the information onto Strava as well.

I was always a mapmyride guy. But tried strava recently and found it was much better for motivation. Knowing that if i just push myself a little here, I can beat my PR on this stretch is a great booster. That said, i prefer mapmyride as a whole app. Depends really what you're looking for.

I usually upload my rides to 3 separate sites.
strava, ride with gps and Garmin connect.
They all have good and bad sides.

Runtastic, don't let the name fool you. Its got a cycling mode and a dedicated cycling app.

Endomondo... allows you to link your account with myfitnesspal & earndit among others. Simple interface and also you can export your endomondo rides onto other sites as it allows data export by gpx

Pretty sure mapmyfitness (all apps) added myfitnesspal support just last week too!

ride with gps have a beta trial of their Android App (maybe an iphone version out there, I don't know). The beta is easy to sign up to (join a google group). I've not used it to record a trip but have played around with it, viewing old rides and so on. Looks like it ticks all the boxes.

I use Cyclemeter (on iPhone) I have tried Strava but prefer cyclometer. It does exactly what I need and is very simple to use.

Strava is my favourite. I like to have my routes on Mapmyride in case I'm going somewhere new and need to stop for directions (though the turn-by-turn navigation on the edge 500 usually takes care of that). Google Maps of course is also pretty handy if you know roughly where you want to go but need to check a turn or something. The Garmin connect app is ok, though I don;t use it much. Strava covers most things that the Garmin connect app does, though if you have the newer Edge units, you need it to do the live tracking thing.

I use MMR as I find it very easy to use but I found it very hard on my iPhone battery. Just before Christmas I bought a Garmin 200 and I now use it on spins and upload the data to both Garmin Connect and MMR.

Just this week I fired up Strava and initially I find it awkward but that's probably due to me being unfamiliar with it so I'll need to keep with it to get used to it. It does appear that more serious folk use Strava as my segment/course achievements are well inferior to MMR. This alone will help push me along to better things - I hope.

In conclusion, I'll continue to use all three (MMR, Garmin Connect & Strava) for now until I decide which is optimal for my purposes.

I have most of them as I was looking for an app that could show inclines, ended up with a garmin but that is besides the point.

Cyclemeter, great if you do not want a log of your cycles and the bat life is good but shows about 80% of what a garmin can show. I used this for 60k plus spins.

Strava and map my ride are decent but map my ride is better for live readings on the fly and for the web interface, strava is better for for the segments.

I used mostly mmr on the fly and then used a conversion file to upload into strava http://mapmyridetcxexport.azurewebsites.net/
