Knocking Noise when going round a roundabout

I had my outer cv gator replaced on my 05 passat two weeks ago on the drivers side. I have noticed in the last 3-4 days a knocking noise coming from the drivers side when going around roundabouts.

Can anyone offer any ideas what it might be and how much it could cost to repair this issue?

Sounds like the actual CV joint might be gone, if you only notice the noise in corners.

Cheers, would you have any rough idea on how much this may cost?

Stick your head under the car and inspect the gaiter.
Sounds like the grease inside is gone, as in - they didn't do the gaiter job right.
It's only been two weeks, take it back to where they did the job last time and tell them about it.

Sounds like the boot is torn and the grease is gone from it. May have a bit of damage done to the joint aswell so may be worth replacing the lot. I got full joint for a golf for 55 quid not that long ago second hand in scrap yard and was fine after. Replaced the boot anyway just to be sure

For the cost of a CV kit, just get one and stick it on.

I have used these CV's and they are fine.

would broken gator be an nct failure? i believe unless you check gators on a 2 weekly or 500km basis forget about replacing a gator on its own unless you are sure it's freshly broken. a dealer showed me a broken gator about 10 years ago , the grease inside had dried out and the owner insisted on replacing gator without cv joint ,dealer guaranteed that cv would have to be replace shortly and sure enough a month later it was, he reckoned that if gator was left alone it would last at least 6 months, his reason fresh grease would dissolve old grease rapidly, old grease would support and keep shaft & joints in-line ! what is the opinion on that?

Yes. NCT manual fails for missing damaged dustcovers on balljoints and CV drives.

If the cv has been damaged for some time and much of the grease has gone out of it then you need to remove the joint and wash it out thoroughly :
first work degreaser into it with a brush , leave it a few mins and then wash it out well with water (water with some pressure if possible) ; then dry it thoroughly - use a blowgun to blow out all the water ; refill it with grease and work the grease in around the joint ; then refit the lot .
I followed this procedure many times in the past and cv joints went on for a long time afterwards . Takes time but was worth it .
If the boot has been torn for a while as well as the grease getting out grit gets in - and if you don't get rid of this it will shorten the life of the joint as it acts like a grinding paste .
CV joints were much more expensive years back so replacement was not undertaken lightly . At the price of new ones now the time spent cleaning etc would not be justified I think - as the joint could have been on the way out before the boot failed .

Yes, a broken gaiter would fail nct. I had to replace one with just a tiny hole it when I failed once. I also failed on a drop link so had to get underneath anyway.
