Biomedical Science job search information

    Hello,

My girlfriend and I came to live in Dublin 6 months ago and she has a Honours Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Sciences. She had her qualifications recognized and has now AMLS membership but has no laboratory experience other than the curricular internships.

She has applied to many job openings but none give any reply, the only reply she had was from a public hospital position stating she was not eligible because of the lack of experience.

We are considering our options and thought about asking for a laboratory to take her on a non-paid internship for 6 months.
    • Would you say that's something laboratories would be willing to accept?
    • Would it help her?
    • Any ideas or suggestions you could give to someone on this situation?

    Thanks!

Managers and chiefs may be tempted but unions would not agree with a volunteer doing work that should be paid. If it's not work that should be paid then it's no use to her.
Has she contacted the 2 agencies? (Cpl & ttm). I loathe to recommend them but they frequently have short contracts all over the country that would help her gain experience. Other than that keep an eye on each hospitals careers/vacancy web pages as well as the HSE and publicjobs ones. Go to academy and union meetings to meet managers and chiefs to find out if there are any short term opportunities.

She is registered in both agencies you mention and they have not been helpful at all.

The thing is, we've been applying consistently to all suitable openings in the channels you mention for so long now but we haven't even landed an interview, we thought about volunteering work out of desperation but even that is pointless?

Do you think asking all labs for an internship without mentioning if it's paid or not would yield better results?

How would a fresh graduate in Biomedical Science find a job?

    Thanks for your help

Is she sure that she is checking every individual hospitals own website as well as general ones?
Most job adverts, especially the public ones, give a contact for the lab manager or chief for role specific queries. Maybe she could ask to meet one to review her CV or ask for feedback on how she could improve her applications? Is she emphasising that she satisfies the DOHC criteria by way of eligibility for membership of the AMLS? If she is a member, does she sign her professional correspondence "mAMLS"?

Recent graduates normally get locum jobs in the labs they trained in. Then by the time the permanent position is sanctioned they are fully trained and experienced. Also word of mouth. There are less than 2000 of us so if someone is good (or bad) word travels along the grapevine and they may be headhunted.

The lab i work in has taken on some unpaid volunteers and in her place thats what i would do as it will be very hard to get a job without experience.
She should keep an eye out on the job section of the AMLS website and there is also a facebook site that advertises locum positions.
