ICT in secondary and CPD

Hi all just wondering if I could get some views from teachers on ICT in second level. I saw a small snippet on TV of how other countries are doing it..and a young teacher said we are falling way behind here in "knowledge economy Ireland"... but is this currently happening at all second level schools?

Currently involved in setting up an association for ICT teachers in PLC to share resources, develop new fetac modules and provide CPD courses for teachers.
Is there any existing association for secondary level teachers to do this? Would anyone here be interested in hearing more details when it is live?

Hopefully will get some different thoughts and opinions..

should get better and a new impetus when the 100mb is finished and govt publishes the new ict plan in next few months. I believe its nearly ready.

The 100mb makes no difference when it has to be split over a large number of computers.

have a look at CESI.ie the Computers in Education Society Ireland. Their mailing list has over 1000 on it exchanging views, helpful information, CPD, all from those with an interest in the use of ICT in education. Pose your question there and see what happens.

I was referring more to the future where there will be increasing use of ICT by students (BYOB, Ipads etc) which makes the 100mb pretty useless as well as various issues with the two companies which run the broadband.

It is extremely unreliable from experience.

There's more to ict than internet access

True. However the cloud is largely inaccessible (bar google drive) without it which is very useful. Sites like Sophia, quizlet, socrates are all very useful. The department's new admin package is also run on the cloud so without access to the internet there will be a few headaches.

I would assume that the 100mb could be increased over the years if demands and technology permits. Its a big thing to get 100mb to every rural sec school to be honest

the point is that 600 kids don't have to be using it at the same time. PPOD isn't hard on a connection and only requires synchronization every so often, this can be done at off peak times.

in not being contrary, 100m is better than what we have now. We have it the last two years and its fine.

Lucky devils, we are using roughly 5-6Mb if lucky split amongst the whole school!
