Voice performances only...

Leaving aside animations, what examples of voice performances can people think of, where the actor/actress never appeared onscreen?

What got me thinking about this was Scarlett Johansson in Spike Jones' upcoming film Her.

    I'll give you some examples...
    • Douglas Rain as HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey
    • Kevin Spacey as GERTY in Moon
    • Sally Kellerman as the boss in Payback (Straight Up) [She replaced Kris Kristofferson's character and never appeared on screen]
Can anyone think of any others?

as in purely vocal or voicing a CGI character? Andy Serkis does appear onscreen as Smeagol and is the basis for the motion capture in the LOTR films. Paul Bettany is good as JARVIS in the Iron Man movies.

Morgan Freeman in March Of The Penguins.

If I ever want something narrated, Moran is the man. That man's voice is pure aural sex.

Not sure of it counts, but I'd say Richard Dreyfuss in Stand By Me.

It's rare that I think a book lives up to it's screen adaption and I know he appears very very briefly in it, but his narration in that movie as his character looked back on his youth, perfectly conveyed all the varying emotions.

Thanks, but I was thinking more of performances that interact with other cast members, rather than voiceovers or documentaries.

    Rosemary's Baby

When Rosemary calls Donald Baumgart, the actor who goes blind and is replaced by Guy, the voice heard is that of actor Tony Curtis. Farrow, who had not been told who would be reading Baumgart's lines, recognized the voice but could not place it. The slight confusion she displays throughout the call was exactly what Polanski hoped to capture by not revealing Curtis' identity in advance.

Also, Ted Levine, famous for being Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs, was the voice over the CB radio of the killer Rusty Nail, in the Paul Walker movie Joy Ride.

There are a few in AI: Artificial Intelligence. Meryl Streep voices the Blue Fairy and Robin Williams is the holograph, Dr. Know.

Charlie's Angels (the TV series). John Forsythe (aka Blake Carrington from Dynasty) was the voice of Charlie.

    Does that count? :)

Not sure if it counts but I love Hugh Ross' narration during The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He has one of those voices that's just magical, I'm in love with his voice. He does a number of car commercials and his voice alone makes them so much classier.

    Scarlett Johansson in Her.

Spike Jonez was 100% right to completely re-voice the film from scratch and use her.

Oh and compulsory Scarlett pic ;)
