Bad boards!

    Hi there,
    I have a problem with some floorboards that were supplied for our new house. The guy fitting the solid wood floors took the entire supply from his usual supplier and as this was about half of what was required, asked them to get the same again in. When the flooring guy ran out of boards, the supplier had not restocked so he ordered them from another supplier.

    All the flooring is now finished, but the second lot of boards is now warping and shrinking. The first lot are still tight and flat.

    The rep from the flooring supplier is coming out tomorrow to look at the floor. My questions are: what rights do I have to support me, and what can I ask the supplier to do about the situation?

    He may take up the warped floors and replace them and not charge you. All he can do really.
    Won't charge for the floors or the fitting.
    How did they warp anyway. Wet underlay?

    with flooring you have to leave in the house for a week before you install them

    There is no obvious reason for the second batch of wood to warp. Both batches were left for about a week in the house before being laid. Both batches are laid in the same room on 3/4" waterproof ply. Both laid by the same fitter. Only the second batch from the second supplier warped. The first batch, in the same room and from a different supplier, is fine.

    The only conclusion I can draw is that there is something wrong with the second batch of wood.

    Would the supplier of the bad boards be required to pay the fitter to take up the bad boards and replace with good ones that they supply?

    If the fitter was contracted to supply & fit then the fitter is directly responsible to you for the entire cost. Whether his supplier compensates him for this is his concern.

    However if you bought the flooring directly from the supplier and the fitter was only contracted to fit and fitting was done correctly then yes, imo the supplier would be responsible for the entire cost of supply and refitting.
