Jesus, that's a shock. I was just reading the other day that he was lining up Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhall for his next directorial effort, was quite looking forward to seeing it :(

A truly special and gifted actor. His presence will be greatly missed.

Really rather shocked by the news about Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He's one of the most talented actors in perhaps the history of the medium and his presence alone would have me queuing for a film. Number of reports state that it was an accidental drug overdose and when found he had a string stuck in his arm. Cinema really has lost own its true greats. To think of all the great performances were going to miss out on as a result if his death.

He elevated everything he was in. Massive loss and tragedy. RIP

Moved all the posts to the dedicated thread, think this news is better served by its own topic.

Shocking news; my thoughts go to his wife & 3 children.

Truly one of the great character actors of the modern age; a magnetic presence in all his features and cinema is lesser for his passing. RIP.

My absolute favourite actor on the planet, he was peerless imo.

His roles in Magnolia, Capote, The Master etc. are all deservedly heralded, but my favourite is probably Jack Goes Boating. Brilliant performance.

I even loved him in Along Came Polly :(

Like a punch in the stomach, one of my favourite actors, the kind of actor who, if he was in a movie, I'd almost automatically watch that movie. Hugely talented individual, such a great screen presence and remarkable character actor. A great loss to movie fans but an even greater loss to his family and friends. RIP

Terrible news. and woody Allen still roams about :(

Can't quite get my head round this news-He was bleakly brilliant in Capote, and one of the few positives in "The Boat That Rocked"-first caught him in Magnolia, and he was the kind of actor who made you forget who PSH was and believe totally in the character he was portraying. Definitely one of those actors whose name was synonymous with "watch this movie" for me. He'll be missed :(

I recall reading a great article in praise of Hoffman, a number of years ago. The journalist argued that when you hire Tom Cruise for a movie, you get Tom Cruise; when you hire Tom Hanks, you invariably get a character similar to Hanks; but when you hire Hoffman you got a man who totally dedicates himself to the character, resulting in a totally unique portrayal, nothing like Hoffman himself.

He had great range as an actor, easily fitting into both comedy and drama. He had a great eye for a role, and you could always rely on the movies he was in to be good.

Synecdoche, New York will be altogether more poignant and far more meaningful on its next re-watch.

    RIP

So shocked to hear of his death on the TV a few minutes ago. A truly wonderful talent. I think the first time I remember seeing him ina movie was Boogie Nights and he just stood out on screen, even in what was a relatively small role. Really feel for his partner and three children.

    drug overdose

Hoffman, 46, was found in the bathroom of the fourth-floor

Police found what they believe to be heroin inside the apartment

Hoffman's body was discovered by a playwright who had been working with him.

A needle was found in one of the actor's arms

I presume he's refering to the recent news that Woody Allens daughter has reaffirmed her statement from some years ago where she alleged Allen had abused her. In fairness when he got with his nineteen year old adopted daughter I thought he was dodgy, aparrently he was doing worse still and the investigating offices said the was probably a case to answer but no one seemed to follow up on it.

Sky news are reporting that it was a drug overdose and that NYPD police said he was found with a needle is his arm within the apartment.

    Shocking.

Very sad. I don't think anyone's mentioned Almost Famous yet. I think his portrayal of Lester Bangs was shot in two or three days, when he was suffering from the flu. Superb.

My first memory of watching Hoffman was when a friend dragged me along to Along Came Polly about 10 years ago. His scenes were our only laughs in the whole film, so indicative of what a scene-stealer he’s always been. R.I.P.

Absolutely can't believe this. One of my favourites. One if the most talented actors of his generations. I wouldn't usually feel so sad ovr the death of a celebrity, but he was an extremely talented individual. Terrible day for film. Such a loss.

Sad news, was one of those actors that was usually the best thing in whatever film he was in, his performance in The Master was immense.

agree about MI3 too, hands down the best villain of the series
