My mother is thinking of buying a ~2009 Volvo S40. I see the main engine options are 1.6 and 2.0 Diesels and a 1.8 Petrol. Any thoughts on any of these options? Her day to day driving would be around town with frequent longer distance spins. Maybe 15/20k miles/year I would estimate.

Most of the post 2008 S40 1.8 litres were the flex fuel models, that can run on both unleaded or cheaper bioethanol at the time. They are quite thirsty and bioethanol is no longer sold in the Republic but the 1.8 would probably be more suitable to city type driving over the diesels.

The S40 was also available in 1.6 litre petrol, straight out of the Focus and not the most agile but it's conventional, not as thirsty as the flex fuel and will probably do the same thing around town:
