    Hi all,

Has anyone ever heard of the link between homoginised milk and an increased risk of atherosclerosis? I recently came across some some info on this (http://www.realmilk.com/health/milk-homogenization-and-heart-disease/) and wondered if anyone had any further info or thoughts.

The literature referred to in the above link is fairly old and may have been since discredited (or indeed back up).

I never heard of this link until very recently and came as a surprise...I drink about 1 - 2 litres a day so I'd like to get more info on it!

    Hi Andrew,

Just a quick FYI, your link above doesn't work correctly (think a bracket got stuck to the end of the URL), here's a working link:
    http://www.realmilk.com/health/milk-homogenization-and-heart-disease/

I did a quick search in PubMed for any research about homogenised milk and heart disease but can't find anything on the topic published more recently than 1983. There are plenty of cohort studies looking at the relationship between dairy intake and cardiovascular disease/events however these do not separate out exposure by type of dairy product (e.g. cheese, butter, milk), let alone separating homogenised and non-homogenised/raw milk.

Of the few papers published on the topic of homogenised milk and xanthine oxidase being related to atherosclerosis, most seem to refute this theory and suggest there is no evidence to support it. I would imagine if there was further evidence to support such a relationship, this would have been published some time in the last 30 years. As no such evidence appears to exist, I would discount any relationship between homogenised milk and atherosclerosis based on the available evidence.

No problem. Best of luck with your continued research!

Meant to say earlier, be mindful of the sources of any evidence you do find. The site linked above appears to be be a support group for raw milk and so would have an interest in presenting evidence to support the dangers of processed or homogenised milk. If you are looking for unbiased and objective sources of evidence, I would suggest searching for peer reviewed journal articles on the likes of www.pubmed.com or scholar.google.com. Good luck :)
