Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying a Usb on e-bay.
I got a 32gb Toshiba one before Christmas.
Put over 20gb of stuff on it.
It looked like everything was on it until I opened the folders and most were empty.
Tested the usb and the results said only 3.7gb usable memory,

Like everything else on eBay, you need to check the seller's feedback before making a purchase.

    Good feedback!
    But for other items.
    No feedback for usb sticks.
Item was removed from listings afterwards.
Maybe seller wasn't aware when he received the fakes, I don't know.
Got message off ebay saying if I wasn't after paying, I was not obliged to pay.
If I was after paying, then open a case on paypal.

How could you have put 20 gigs onto a stick with only 3.7 available?

    Can't be done.

20 gigs didn't go on it.
    It looked like it did.
The folders were empty when opened.
Googled fake usb's and what I gather is that they do something to make it look like you have 32gigs.

It could be just a faulty stick ,

You could buy an original in a reputable store , and the same problem can arise .

Maybe, but why would e-bay remove them and tell me, I am not obligated to pay?

Because they were fake. Many buyers probably complained and reported the ad, resulting in eBay taking action.

Open a case and get your money back. Next time, buy in a shop or on a website that isn't eBay.

    Just received refund from Paypal.
I'd have no problem using e-bay again.
I've bought over 200 items and only twice I had issues.
Both times I have been refunded so all good really.

sellers of fakes can have good feedback though. People often do not discover it is a con until well after leaving positive feedback.

I don't buy any memory devices off ebay anymore, they are often more expensive anyways.

I use amazon.co.uk or www.mymemory.co.uk (they are in jersey so you can be liable for vat)

Ok....wierd! Surely if you try and add 20GB the computer would just say 'sorry, not enough space'??

No it can't, a faulty USB stick or any faulty memory for that matter will never behave in this way, it will show an error, and certainly not show that its transferring data when its not. The fakes have software embedded in a hidden partition to emulate a larger capacity so it will look like its transferring the data when it is not. This used to be very common practice with cheap MP3 players from china and from ebay.
