It will hardly affect his Olympic hopes as he's retired from boxing.
And he always struck me as a bit of an idiot so he'll fit right in in the political arena.

A boxer can be no worse than some of those other professions that seem to always turn to politics e.g. teachers, publicans etc.

haha.. FG must be worried if they're resorting to drafting in celebrity candidates

He's a likeable tool, which makes him an ideal council candidate.

That's one of the many things wrong with politics in this (and some other) countries. Too many candidates being chosen because they're celebs in a completely different field and will attract voters by their celebrity status; and not because they have any proven track record in the areas of public service, law, corporate governance, finance or any other relevant fields. It's as bad as people running simply because their father/uncle/brother has died and they want to keep the seat in the family.

Politics is reliant on people like him, a good image but no mind for the issues..... he'll fit right in.

Seems like he's looking to exploit his "celebrity" status before it dries up and get himself on the gravy train.

Kenny egan is going to run in the local elections.
Do ye think balancing sport and politics will work out for him.
I hope it dosent affect his chances in the next olympics.

Who? ..............Oh, you mean 'Kenneth' Egan?

Wonder will he wear his denim blazer. "It's all about the Benjamins" - Ha! Dope! :D

You can hardly criticise him for that though?

Egan has his faults - but he has proved capable of dedication, application and fair play. Wish my local politicians took a leaf from his book. People who begrudge him probably haven't an inkling what it takes to achieve a regional medal - let alone an Olympic medal.

Expected GAA player, but then that would hardly be threadworthy.

    No, he's an Egan actually.

    Or should that be 'eegit'?

No one's criticising his achievements. Some of us are just querying how those specific achievements qualify him to be a public representative.

Well at the very least, I wouldn't be expect his past career as a sportsperson to be held against him.

As long as he turns out to be a good politician doesn't matter what he did before.

And he's only going for local elections, so it's up to the voters of Clondalkin whether they think he is a good choice to represent them

Yes but how does being a teacher, lawyer, accountant, publican, match-stick maker etc. qualify you to be a public representative?
The only thing that matters is votes.

A knowledge of how the public sector works; how legislation is drafted; EU affairs etc is relevant to the job. I agree teaching, farming or owning the local pub don't particularly qualify you for the job. Obviously people might have experience outside of their actual job that makes them ideal to run for public office but no one should be chosen because they're already famous, or their father had the seat before them or stuff like that. But unfortunately that seems to be how it works a lot of the time in this country.

Read my post again - see the list of qualities needed for his sporting success?

Is there any of them YOU wouldn't like to see in a politician?

    Yes, his penis.
