Firstly apologies in advance to any experienced Sat box users for what may appear as silly questions, but totally new to the notion and am exploring replacing my current standard sky dish sub for a Vu+ or Dreambox.

I have looked through a few of the threads here which are mighty informative I have to say, but I still can't figure out which box would be best for what I need.

If I narrow it down to a final decision all the info in the threads will probably be even more informative to me as I can then target them for my specific box.

I would like a setup that will allow me to access satellite similar to my current dish setup, but will also allow me access to RTE and other Saorview channels and a nice extra addition would be the ability to save to my NAS and also maybe access and stream other files on my NAS, such as saved movies, tv programs etc.

I'm a bit confused as to what each box offers over the other having looked at Vu+ Solo2, Vu+ Ultimo and Vu+ Duo2 and do they come with the tuners installed or do you have to buy and fit them seperate?

Also what is the main difference between Vu and Dreambox, as in which would be more suited to what I would need?

Any information would be hugely appreciated folks. Also if anyone has recently gone down the same path any information on final cost and recommended reliable source for the equipment would be great too.

vu solo2 original,is one of the best boxes i use, also got a vu duo broken at the moment also original and solo all running vix and hooked up to a nas drive,i dont use a dvb-t tuner as other box is a triax combo and those recordings are on an external hdd,solo2 has replaced others that had the ultimo and the duo2 knocks the pants off them all but very expensive with all the tuners fitted
dreamboxes are mostly old boxes or all clones now so images can be critical,i think its only the duo2 you can mess with tuners.
all boxes i have run on the current vix image .

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

From what you have said and from other threads on the forum it's starting to look like the Vu+ solo2 would be the way to go for me.

Just need to gen up a bit more now on that specific piece of kit I suppose and get my mitts on one. Didn't realise the Dreamboxes were all oder and just clones, I imagine that could throw up all sorts of unknowns when it comes to firmware upgrades etc. so I'm going to keep clear of them.

Thanks again, the info is much appreciated.

The GigaBlue Quad is a super receiver. Sold my Vu Duo and replaced with Quad. The link below is a great price for a twin satellite and twin terrestrial receiver. It does all you require and more.

That GibaBlue appears to be a fine bit of kit! It's also a new option I haven't come across so far either so thanks a million for that.

What sort of support is available for it as in, is it a very popular model and has it forums etc and lots of plugins like the Vu? Also can you use the same vix images etc on this as the vu?

How long have you had yours and was it easy to set up?

Its supported by VIX team. Its supports lots plugins like vu receivers. I bought my first one in June 2013. I then bought a 2nd one in Dec 2013. Great receiver at a great price.

I got a VU+ Solo2 on Saturday, and I'm well impressed. Tried a few images, settled on Blackhole for now. It's a very decent box.

Have had VU+ Duo and Ultimo which are great boxes but pricey.

I currently have the Gigablue Quad.

Bang for buck Its the best out there. 4 sat tuners if you want or like me you can do 1 DVB-T and 3 Sat.

I did have a few issues with failed recordings but I reseated the extra tuners and resinstalled the latest Vix and its perfect now. I have tried all the image variants and Vix is the best especially coming from Sky as CrossEPG (for EPG download), Autotimers and the CoolTV guide are already built in ready to go. Automtimers in particular work best on Vix where you can add series link type setups from the CoolTV and Enigma TV guides directly.

These plugins can be downloaded on other variants but they dont quite integrate as cleanly as in Vix.

The box is very quiet running - no fan and takes 2.5" HDD which are quieter also. Most impressive is the quick boot up and general performance.

For the price in my view the GgigalBlue Quad is the best Enigama2 box out there and ideal for FTA Irish / UK TV viewing.

slegs did you change the tuner positions or just take them out and re-insert? Can you get all saorview on one dtt tuner? and can you record one mux and record another mux on dttt ie at same time?

You can get all DTT saorview on one tuner. But you need 2 tuners to record one mux and record another mux on dtt at same time.

Is it possible to run XBMC/Navi-X in any of the receivers mentioned?

I switched them while resetting...as mentioned you would need two DVB-T tuners to record FTA RTE while watching the other MUX but there is an alternative tuner option in Enigma if you could get RTE from a card somehow and use the Sat tuners as a backup option while watching DVB-T.....this could work very well

Not that I am aware of....I us a Raspberry PI with a NAS for my XBMC/Internet Video and Enigma for my live TV. Works perfectly

I ditched sky for a Duo2 at Christmas and I must say I'm delighted. The box is very neat, well made, and has the tidiest looking internals I've probably ever seen on any piece of electronics.

I'm not recording to my NAS, but there's no reason why you couldn't, so long as your network will support it. I've a twin sat tuner and internal DVB-T, only issue is being limited to watching/recording a single terrestrial channel at a time. A USB DVB-T tuner would sort that, but I'm using Vix which doesn't have the greatest support for them on the Vu+ boxes. Anyway, it hasn't been a huge problem to date.

Most importantly of course, it got the spousal seal of approval :-)

    Hi
I replaced my Sky box with a VU+ DUO2 about a month ago.
I like the box and am running VIX Helios and have a few questions if anyone can help out. I apologise if these are standard questions.

I have attached the DUO2 to 2 cables coming form my LNB (the LNB supports 4 cables). How many channels am I suppose to be able to watch & record. The device manual says up to 16 but I am guessing this is with an additional twin tuner (not just the 1 twin tuner it came with). Can i record up to 8 or am i missing something. Is this only possible with multiple USB tuners or is there another piece of hardware needed.

I have it on a fixed dish at present and have set tuner A to simple and Tuner B to be the same.

Is there a better setup i should be doing to get more channels/recordings at the same time.
    Regards

on my solo2 i had 6 recording at once 3 on each tuner,3 programmes on 1 tp and 3 on an other tp,when you use those tps to record on other tps go dark=not available to use. it would be the lack of channels to record at the same time that does not give you the option,5000 on one sat you could have a party lol.

Thats great. I can do this fine I guess because as I am watching a show and recording, I can see the other channels greyed out and just choose the channel on the same transponder to get another recording. I suppose my issue is more that if I set a few timers, I get a conflict. Do you know if there is away to (or and addon) that allows you to check to see if a timer recording can be set to go on a transponder with another recording timer. I mean that if you choose to record a second timer and that it is on a channel on a different transponder, that you can choose to do a search (or something like that) for the same channel on the same transponder.

Also is my simple setup on each port (A/B) the best setup for my situation at the moment, i.e. simple setup on port A, exact same on Port B. Then I did a blind scan.

Thanks for all the help so far and apologise for any stupid/newbie questions.

you have set your box up like a sky + hd works,if your not on same tp and time runs over it will give you a conflict handy them channels+1,never bothered to check " kingofsats " for sat tp as box either sets it up or warns you
