Play in steering rack 2007 corolla

looking for a bit of advice had corolla 07 car in for pre Nct service and garage told me about play in steering rack steering wheel moves about inch or two and a knocking noise can be heard when I turn wheel , they advised me to keep an eye on it and may need to be replaced .. any help appreciated and of course rough cost…

looking for a bit of advice had corolla 07 car in for pre Nct service and garage told me about play in steering rack steering wheel moves about inch or two and a knocking noise can be heard when I turn wheel , they advised me to keep an eye on it and may need to be replaced .. any help appreciated and of course rough cost would be a bonus if I went for replacement

I feel steering wheel pulls to the left when I brake other than that no problem and garage freed out front caliper so that could have been the cause also..
in fairness to garage they were not pushing me to get it replaced / repaired but told me to keep an eye on it in case it gets any worse
