Hi, looking for some advice and an opinion. Currently all doors etc in my house are pine with a varnish finish. Its a new house build in 2009 but I am beginning to think the pine look is a bit dated. Was thinking about painting the whole lot white but I am unsure?

Anybody have any advice or alternatives?

It can be a bit tricky painting over varnish. You need to give it a really good rub down with sandpaper and prime it before painting. Otherwise the paint will chip off over time.you will have a fair bit of filling and caulking to do too to make it look right.
If you do go ahead and paint all the wood work it will really transform your home though, you'll be very happy with the result, just take your time and do it right.

Agree that Pine is definately dated looking but painting all your varnished pine wood work (assuming its architraves and skirting too?) would be a pretty serious job as oisinbutler says - would it be an idea to stain/use darker varnish instead? Varnished wood has a LOT of advantages - we're slowly going from painted white back to varnished wood!!!!
