rear shifter/derailleur problem

I have a road bike with ultegra groupset.

The shifter is moving the rear derailleur down but not up.

It seems that the cable is not moving the real derailleur when there is tension on it.

When I push the derailleur inwards and move the chain onto the big ring on the cassette, then there is no tension on the cable and shifter works. With tension, the shifter will move the derailleur down with no problems.

I had it in a bike shop to have a look at it and they say that the shifter has to be replaced. They did replace the cable.

I seem to think that it's the rear derailleur which I cleaned to no avail.

Just wondering if anyone has any insights.

    Thanks

    U need a new bike! :)

If u can move the derailler by hand ( with the cable disconnected) and it moves ok, then the cable or shifter are the problem. As a new cable has been fitted, then the shifter probably is faulty.

I had contemplated buying a bike from wiggle.

Then I can take my time in repairing my other bike.

try washing it out with wd40. really douse it. this can wash out old grease. this might get it shifting again. I did this as mine wouldn't shift down. it's a good idea to spray with spray lithium grease when it does start to work as it needs grease to stop it frown wearing out
