Astra 2E @ 28E

I haven't seen any posts on boards about this, so I thought I'd mention it.

Astra 2E is due to arrive at 28E in the next day or so and then some channels will no doubt move over to it a few days afterwards. Fairly sure most retain their exact same freqs etc so it will be seamless, but be prepared for some channels to require a re-scan on generic FTA boxes. (With Sky or Freesat you won't notice a thing).

The major impact will be for those in Europe currently enjoying TV from Astra 1N @ 28E which has a wider beam designed for the position @ 19E. 1N will start moving once 2E is active and stable.

Thread over on DS as well. Meant to be at 29.9E this morning, so not far to go now.

Best place I found for all this info is the techie lads over at satellites.co.uk/forums. They have been tracking the beacon on it. Also a few of them have taken long exposure photos of the SATs. Yes it is possible! Quite unbelievable really. They tend to be non moving pixels of light in a night sky of moving stars.

This bird I imagine will have a tight beam over these Isles, is that correct?

I believe it does have a similar UK/Ireland beam footprint to 2F. So those further away in Europe with FTA will notice anything that moves from 1N to the UK beam on 2E for sure. The 1N spot beam footprint was never designed for the UK and fringe reports say it is much larger.

According to kingofsat.net there's 190 FTA channels and 370 odd encrypted ones on Astra 1N. Of course the Sky encrypted ones will stay on the PE beam.... for those Sky boxes in Spain and beyond....

    Hey folks,
Please excuse me if this is an idiot question. We have Freesat (Ariva 150) tuned to Astra 2A, but as of today the freesat channels are all gone. Could this new satellite moving in have something to do with it?

Arivas are not Freesat boxes. They receive the same free-to-air satellite broadcasts, though.

The new satellite is nothing to do with your problem: maybe your dish has become misaligned or water has got into cables or some other issue.

Sound. Thanks for that - it's a bit stormy out so will check tomorrow!

There is a lot of discussion on the SatelliteUK forum. Flysat is showing some transponders which have switched over to 2E. Won't affect anyone in this part of the world.

anyone got a picture of what the astra satellite at 28.2e looks like in space.

i thought all the different 2a 2b etc were linked together?

having done some reading that's not the case.

this is a class picture. http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/geo_belt1.jpg
