few queries on social welfare

hi guys, i was working for a year in a bank and then my contract came to an end. ive been out of work since november 2013. i have never claimed social welfare before so wanted to ask a few things.

i am 28 and living at home and i also have saved 5000 euro. however, i pay health insurance, car tax, car insurance, petrol and many other expenses. i am considering going on job seekers allowance. i will number my questions to make it easier from the kind person who helps me.

    1. when i was working in the bank it was through a recruitment agency. upon finishing i was offered a 3 month contract with low pay in another bank and i refused it as i am looking for higher pay and i did a year of low pay already in the bank. if social welfare come to know that i refused a job with the agency, will they cut me off or refuse me from claiming?

    2. do social welfare force people onto job bride internship schemes? id hate to be forced onto something. what is the worst that can happen if i refuse? could they ask me to pay back all the money i claimed from them in the time before i refused? also if i got my payment cut for refusing some course i amnt interested in, could they put a big black mark against me and refuse me to claim again in the future?

    3. to be honest i feel like i need to travel sometime in the near future. if i sign off to go travelling in a few months time, will i be allowed sign back on in future when i return?

    4. is it true that after 3 months on the dole, everybody is offered an internship and must do it to continue claiming?

    5. i know i have paid some PRSI contributions in the past but after a few months, i will have claimed more money from social welfare than i paid in PRSI. Will i need to pay back the excess in future times?

    thank you

Depends on the stamps you have filled up. You could be on either JS Benefit or JS Allowance.

Was your contract full time or part time? How long was the contract?

You wont be forced to take up a job bridge scheme but will have to attend a few one on one appointments every so often.

You may be deemed as not available or looking for work if you refuse work. You have to be open to all work.

    2. do social welfare force people onto job bride internship schemes? id hate to be forced onto something. what is the worst that can happen if i refuse? could they ask me to pay back all the money i claimed from them in the time before i refused? also if i got my payment cut for refusing some course i amnt interested in, could they put a big black mark against me and refuse me to claim again in the future?

Not at the moment not onto an internship but you will have to take part in the activation process and may be offered courses and if you decline this then a penalty rate can be applied.

    3. to be honest i feel like i need to travel sometime in the near future. if i sign off to go travelling in a few months time, will i be allowed sign back on in future when i return?

You can sign back on. You may have to complete a habitual residence form depending on how long you are out of the country.

    4. is it true that after 3 months on the dole, everybody is offered an internship and must do it to continue claiming?

    No.

    5. i know i have paid some PRSI contributions in the past but after a few months, i will have claimed more money from social welfare than i paid in PRSI. Will i need to pay back the excess in future times?

    No.

    thank you

    Your welcome

Hi, I just need to clarify on the 'signing on' and traveling abroad matter. I am currently on JA and have to go away for six weeks this summer. I know I can only get paid for two weeks out of the six, but when I do come back and present myself at the office will my payment be "reinstated" or will it start as a new claim ? Thanks in advance !

If you are out of the country more than a month your claim will be closed and you will not get paid holidays during this period. You will have to make a repeat claim on your return.

    Thank you.
So if I make a repeat claim would that automatically cancel out all this time that I already have been on JA ? In terms of qualifying for things such as rent supplement (having to wait 6 moths) etc

No your repeat claim links to your previous jsa claim if its within 12 months and if its jsb if its made within six months of your previous claim. I would presume you would have to make a repeat claim for rent supplement also.
