Hey, I applied for a Job a few weeks ago and got an email asking if I was available for a telephone interview this Thursday. I said yes of course as its a Job that I really really want. Im just gone 20 and I haven't had a proper job yet. I have also had one to one interviews before but never a telephone interview.
What should I expect? Will there be different questions in a telephone interview? I have always got nervous talking on the phone as I can't see the persons face.

In terms of questions it shouldn't be any different just because it's a phone interview. Know what you can about the company, have your CV laid out in front of you, you'll be fine.

I have done a few phone interviews, they are a great first step in the recruitment process. In my experience they never ask anything tricky or technological at this stage. They will mainly ask about yourself and your experience. Get a family member to give you a call and practice a few times before. Just be able to talk about yourself with confidence. There are a few basic interview questions that always get asked in one form or another. Practice them!!!

Also remember that it can be a plus that you are not face to face. You can keep a copy of your CV, a laptop and a few notes in front of you in case you need to refer to them (not too many, you don’t want to be flipping through pages or getting distracted from the phone).

    Few tips:
    1. lock yourself in a quite warm room with a good phone.
    2. Landline is better than mobile
    3. DO NOT let any family or friends anywhere near you while it is going on
    4. Have a glass of water on the table with you
    5. Smile on the phone... they can’t see you but it does make a difference
    6. Don’t do it in your PJs.... put on a nice shirt and trousers to kick your mind into “formal” mode

Most importantly try to relax. Any telephone interviewer I have had has been very informal and nice. Just remember that it’s just another person on the other end who is doing a job, they are not out to get you. The fact that you got an interview means they are interested in you.

    Best of luck!!!

Thanks notmymark. I really do hope it goes well. Its a Job I'm incredibly interested in and would open up so many new doors in my life and help me get out of this ruck I'm stuck in.

The telephone interview went ok, She said she would call me within the next few weeks if they want to bring me in for a one to one interview. I also have a different one to one interview tomorrow morning. :)
