VAT question - goods purchased in UK

    Hi All,

I'm a small business. I purchased goods (adult clothing) from a UK supplier in Sterling. I sell on Amazon, Ebay and wholesale to a few companies here in Ireland

I am not VAT registered in either UK or Ireland (as under threshold in both countries). I paid VAT for goods received into Ireland at 20%.

My question is: should I charge VAT to my customers in Ireland (wholesale or otherwise) and is it ok to charge them in Sterling if they are ok with this?

    Thanks

    No
You cannot charge VAT if you are not VAT registered

You can absorb the VAT into the price you sell to the customer at - but you cannot mention VAT

    Ok, thankyou for the response.

Can you confirm that I was correctly charged VAT by UK supplier?

If so, why wouldn't I be charged VAT if I was VAT registered - how would the UK supplier claim the VAT in this case?

Yes -- UK supplier was corrrect to charge VAT assuming it's a vatable supply

if you were vat registered there is a net Nil VAt position - if he had carged you vat - you would claim back from inland revenue and he would pay same to inland revenue (there is more to it then that but in the end thats essentially what happens)
