Girl gets glue injected into Brain, NHS pays out

I know we have much to complain about in terms of our Health Service, but a story like this one today would make you wonder how bad we really have it!

I'm glad the NHS was taken to the cleaners on this one - I find it incomprehensible that this could even happen at all in a medical environment with supposedly well-trained people at the helm!

Looks like the NHS has the same ridiculous policy as the HSE when it comes to paying out for things that are obviously their fault.

It went to the high court. The HSE seems to do similar, delay and inconvenience the wronged party as much as possible.

Have to say though, stellar journalism;

Throw money at the problem and sweep it under the rug... great solution.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if there were only private hospitals, would such incidents be so commonplace when the risk of being shut down is an issue, and would the perpetrators get away clean? Tens of thousands die due to negligence in the UK alone due to the NHS.

where are you getting those figures??

if there were only private hospitals, that girl probably wouldn't have that operation. some of the most highly skilled surgeons work within the NHS for a fraction of what they're worth, treating people who pay nothing for it.
of course it's not perfect, but it's mostly a level playing field (if only the ar5eholes in their admin offices stopped wasting money)

Way to dodge the main point. I know plenty of people are saved, but these are hardly small figures.

Money ain't much comfort when you have to live the rest of your life with catastrophic brain damage, I imagine

there was no system in place for distinguishing between the syringes containing the glue and those containing the dye, and they got mixed up.

Well how could they possibly foresee that happening eh?

I mean, two syringes with clear liquid in them, what are the chances...

It's easier thought than living it, I'd say. No money is worth your life being ruined.

I think that these cases go to court because it's the only way to have legally binding costs and payments etc. AFAIK the HSE often are quite willing to settle, but they need to have experts decide an amount and then have it legally approved.

At the moment the only method is the courts i think.

I think there is plenty of evidence from private business, in health and in other areas of business, to suggest there would plenty of incidents of things going very badly wrong.
